Researchers at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering developed a material called a “pluripotent plastic,” which has the ability to take on many forms. The material is made up of polymers containing “dynamic covalent bonds,” which can break and re-form reversibly. This versatility may be useful for engineers working in resource-scarce environments like outer space. To develop the new material, Prof. Stuart Rowan worked with PME assistant professor Shrayesh Patel, graduate student Nicholas B., and colleagues at Argonne National Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
