  • Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Monday vetoed a bill that would have offered consumers protections from discrimination created by artificial intelligence systems. If enacted, the bill would have created requirements for companies developing, deploying and using “high-risk” AI systems. It would also have made companies responsible for protecting consumers from the potential bias created by using AI to make “consequential” decisions. The bill defines consequential decisions as those made about an individual’s parole, probation, pardon or any other release from incarceration or court supervision; education enrollment or an education opportunity; employment; access to financial or lending services; health care services; housing; and insurance, among others. https://hubs.li/Q03f0qmf0

  • The Defense Information Systems Agency is preparing to introduce a new platform in one of its overseas cloud environments that will allow users to test a generative artificial intelligence tool on classified networks, according to a defense official. Pending accreditation, the chatbot will be deployed to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and allow users to experiment with genAI models on the Secure Internet Protocol Router (SIPRNet), Jeff Marshall, acting director of DISA’s Hosting and Compute Center, said during a webinar broadcast Tuesday by Federal News Network. The platform is currently in the accreditation stage and is expected to open up “within the next month or so,” Marshall noted. https://hubs.li/Q03f0kDk0

  • The Department of State is continuing to expand its artificial intelligence chatbot known as StateChat, including working toward a mobile version and the ability to query internal messages called cables, a department official involved in that effort told FedScoop. John Silson, director of analytics in the State Department’s Center for Analytics, said the agency is “working on building out StateChat as a mobile application that our team members can use on their government phones.” Silson, who was speaking on a panel at Scoop News Group’s SNG Live event Thursday, said those efforts will continue to ensure security, but will also put the technology into “diplomats’ hands as they’re walking around, and taking meetings, and working with individuals. https://hubs.li/Q03f0jHn0

  • The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office and Robert Fulk, its chief information officer, on Tuesday unveiled “Captain Record,” a generative artificial intelligence tool that allows users to search more than 100 years’ worth of state documents. Captain Record, which uses Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and Gemini 2.0 tools, and the automation platform mavQ, allows users to search across 20 million pages of archived records from the secretary of state and its divisions of business services, securities and auto dealers. Captain Record can locate anything from a business registration from 1923 to a financial filing from last year. https://hubs.li/Q03f0gMM0

  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey shared the state’s artificial intelligence task force final report on Tuesday, revealing that nearly 25% of agencies are using it. The task force’s 41-page report included an inventory of AI uses, and found that of the state’s 139 state agencies, 35 agencies reported using 108 different generative tools from 72 different vendors. The nearly 25% of state agencies that reported using generative AI said they were deploying it for a variety of use cases, including text generation, language translation, software code development and complex problem-solving. The report stated, however, that this inventory might not paint the entire picture of how agencies are using the tech on the day-to-day. https://hubs.li/Q03f0cd70
