𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢-𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩? We recently modeled asteroid 2024 PT5 in FreeFlyer as a Custom CelestialObject using JPL Horizons' SPICE data. Its ephemeris spans the asteroid’s close approach to Earth in January 2025, visualized in three distinct reference frames. Sometimes, reality feels straight out of a sci-fi movie. Earth’s orbit currently hosts a "mini-moon" the size of a city bus – asteroid 2024 PT5. Since September 29th, PT5 has been hovering about nine times farther than the Moon. During its closest approach in January 2025, it’ll still be five times the Moon’s distance before it casually continues its orbit around the Sun. (Or does it? 👽) While we’re pretty sure it’s a regular asteroid (sorry, no alien mothership this time!), PT5 has certainly captured our imaginations. Unlike past space junk mistaken for mini-moons, this one’s a bona fide asteroid, first spotted by the ATLAS project in August. Curious about how we track celestial objects like 2024 PT5?
