Project stakeholders and ajc recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Camp Colton’s phase I improvements, which includes site enhancements and a new lodge and welcome ramada designed by ajc. ajc architects is thrilled to announce that we recently received a 2024 Honor Award for the Wheeler Farm Outdoor Education Center in Murray, UT. The architectural award celebrates the best architecture regardless of budget, size, style, or type. Award winning projects show a range of outstanding work and highlight the many ways buildings and spaces can enhance our communities and lives. Judges comments included: “It’s a really strong, clear plan. Even how the electrical conduit is detailed within the wood structure—is beautiful.” “The repetitive structure creates a strong, rhythmic flow. The thin roof profile is particularly striking, adding a sense of lightness that’s quite beautiful—especially since such elements can often feel heavy. It’s impressive how the detailing achieves that level of finesse. It’s also a really nice relationship between the steel and wood structures; it’s an excellent project.” “The landscape is quite intriguing, grounded in a simple yet effective idea. The use of slit slats is a clever strategy, and it’s interesting to see this concept applied, especially in the front area where it’s not commonly found. Additionally, the landscape plays with linear elements, echoing the repetition of lines seen in the roof. This interplay of linear components throughout the design enhances the overall interest of the space.” ajc architects’ principals Heber Slabbert, Justin Heppler, and Dijana Rambo were on hand to accept the prestigious award.

Originally a Utah National Guard maintenance shop, the Murray Armory is currently undergoing an adaptive reuse renovation that is transforming it into an active community space. The Guard utilized the building from 1949 until 2004. After sitting vacant for over 18 years, Murray City decided to put the vacant property to use as a community and events center in 2022. ajc was contracted by the City to plan and design the center using the existing building. Plans also called for activating exterior spaces which are surrounded by city-owned properties consisting of Murray Park, the Murray Boys and Girls Club, and Ken Price Ball Park. We’ve enjoyed our collaboration with Murray City stakeholders and Paulsen Construction and look forward to seeing the building in use later this year.

Located in southwestern Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular national parks in the U.S. The Park is home to over 600 well-preserved cliff dwellings built by the Ancestral Puebloans between 600 and 1300 BCE. ajc’s team had the privilege of working with the National Park Service and tribal stakeholders to plan and design a new visitor center with exhibit space, collections, and research spaces. Today, this gateway facility serves nearly half a million visitors per year.
