Sanford Health and Marshfield Clinic Health System are merging, but this doesn't come as a huge surprise, at least for Sanford which has previously attempted mergers with UnityPoint Health, Intermountain Health, and Fairview Health Services - although Marshfield themselves did try to merge once before with Essentia Health. Both organizations have a strong emphasis on serving rural communities. Between 2005 and 2016, rural hospital mergers increased significantly, with more than two-thirds occurring after 2011. While the $10 billion revenue figure might seem modest compared to larger urban systems, it's important to note that this is likely the motivation behind the merger: Rural hospitals generally serve smaller populations, with fewer and less profitable service lines, compared to Urban institutions. #BreakingNews #HealthcareNews #HospitalNews #MandA
