56 years ago, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) coined the term, “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome,” sparking decades of widespread MSG misinformation and anti-Asian xenophobia not only for Chinese food, but all other Asian cuisines. Though the original letter lacked scientific grounding, and extensive research has verified MSG’s safety and health benefits, the 1968 term associated with it is still felt today by people across the U.S. Now, NEJM is working to address its past injustices by revisiting historical biases it has perpetuated and promoting accuracy in science. This is why we believe it’s time to #RevisitCRS: to create a more inclusive food culture by promoting facts over fear, and ending the myth on “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.” So, we’ve partnered with nutrition, public health and culinary experts alike who share this mission to calling on NEJM to close the chapter on this term for good.
