Composers on akojopo.org: Seun Owoaje Seun Owoaje is a Nigerian pianist, composer, and former music lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, with degrees in music from both O.A.U. and the University of Lagos, where he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. He runs Centre Techniques, a music consultancy in Lagos, and has composed a wide array of instrumental, vocal, and orchestral works, performed both in Nigeria and internationally. Over the years, Seun has served in various roles, including music consultant for major events like the All Africa Games (2003) and the Lagos Carnival (2010-2011), where his piano arrangements were featured. Seun’s recent compositions include Atike Ayinke, a rhapsody for piano and orchestra; Impressions in Blue on Fela Anikulapo’s ‘Water no get enemy’, commissioned by Dutch pianist Marcel Worms; and Jesu n Kigbe!, a rondo for tenor, cello, preacher, and orchestra. As orchestra director for Daystar Christian Centre’s Carol Concerts since 2009, he brings orchestral arrangements to life in faith-based settings. Seun also leads Hymnodia as Music Director and is the founder of The Joy of Music, a concert and discussion series, and The Piano Club, a guild for pianists and piano enthusiasts in Lagos. Composers on akojopo.org: Gabriel Abedi Gabriel Abedi is an African composer on a mission to bring a new African-based sound to the world of Classical Music. He is a Ghanaian born and raised in Italy, and a Graduate (BMus) in Music Composition at the Conservatory of Trento and Riva del Garda. After his graduation, he moved to Ghana, in order to deepen the study of traditional Ghanaian and African music, and bring to the Classical Music world a new sound with a strong African identity. He believes that people from African background need to impact at a global level the Classical Music world by bringing something different and at the same time elevate and enhance African cultures and traditions. Some of the his recent commissioned works was by Ensemble Modern (Germany) to compose a piece for chamber ensemble. The commission is part of the “Oluzayo Festival”, born from the cooperation between the Center for Contemporary Music ZAM e.V. and New Music South Africa. He focuses his musical creativity and innovation from Africa. It was premiered on May 31, 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany, and a second performance this yea was scheduled for Johannesburg, South Africa A multi-award winning Composer, he has won several awards in International Composition Competitions. Composers on akojopo.org: Gabriel Adédèjì Gabriel Adédèjì is an award winning composer and pianist whose musical output is contributing to the evolution of West African classical music. This celebrated Nigerian musician started his musical journey through Yorùbá folk tales that his late mother told. These tales usually had music, and Gabriel believes he owes his musical inspiration to this upbringing and the musical culture of the Yorùbá people. He was first introduced to playing drums at the age of 7. and then the talking drum. and was later introduced to playing keyboards at his father’s Church which led to him taking up a career in music. Having studied at Peter Kings College of Music, Society of Performing arts of Nigeria, and the Musical Society of Nigeria, Gabriel currently resides in Lagos where he teaches, writes and performs. He works as an arranger for the Loveworld orchestra and is the resident pianist and Assistant music director of the Arts in Medicine Fellowship, Nigeria. He has worked with many of Nigeria’s finest musicians both locally and internationally. Some of Gabriel’s compositions include Tẹramọ́ṣẹ́, Abule, Ajo, Ọmọ́wùnmí, Ṣọbọ, Erujeje, Tujuka, Ọpẹ, Lau Erebe, Iya Alakara, Malaika, to name a few. Composers on akojopo.org: Dr. Ayọ̀ Olúrántí Ayọ̀ Olúrántí is a distinguished composer, conductor, organist, and music theorist, with significant contributions to the music scenes of Nigeria, the UK, and the USA. His compositions have been performed globally, and he’s directed sacred music programs in churches worldwide. With over 200 sacred works to his name, Ayọ̀ has held key roles such as Composer-In-Residence and Associate Organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh. He currently lectures at Mountain Top University, Nigeria, and was commissioned to write MandEʋe for the 2023 International Society for Contemporary Music and Iná Ràn for Ensemble Recherche (Germany). His opera Ọmọ Àgbẹ̀ premiered in 2022, and his work Hẹlẹlẹ will debut at the 2024 World Choir Games. Ayọ̀ holds first-class honors from the University of Southampton in the UK and earned an MA and PhD in Composition & Theory from the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He has studied under notable scholars like Michael Finnissy and Don Franklin and has blended traditional and contemporary African elements into his work, notably through his study of the Yorùbá dùndún drum. Growing up in various parts of Nigeria, from Gombe to Lagos, her cultural experiences helped shape her musical journey. Her passion for music began early, leading her to become a choir leader in secondary school and receiving the "Most Gifted Singer" award. She later pursued formal music education, earning a degree from the University of Lagos and a diploma from MUSON, where she won Best Vocalist. Aderayo's professional journey has seen her collaborate with industry leaders such as Kenny K’ore and Lara George, release three official songs, including her classical piece "Olusomi," and host an annual worship event, “Worship Unleashed.” As a voice trainer and music teacher, she continues to inspire others while balancing her roles as a musician, educator, and creative artist. His career in music started early, as he began composing at the age of 13 and became a professor by the age of 19. Dr. Viana earned his PhD in composition from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and pursued additional studies at prestigious institutions like the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Arts Academy of Rome, Accademia Chigiana di Siena, and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
