⬇️ Your morning brief of global events for 10/2 ⬇️ 🛳️ The ongoing #strike at 36 major US ports threatens to exacerbate inflation by disrupting freight and supply chains. The strike, led by the International Longshoremen’s Association, is driven by disputes over pay and job loss concerns due to automation. With no negotiations planned, the strike is costing the US economy an estimated $5 billion per day. Importers’ contingency plans may not be enough to prevent shortages and rising prices, raising pressure on President Biden to intervene as the 2024 election approaches. 🌀 President Biden is visiting North and South Carolina to assess the aftermath of Hurricane #Helene, which claimed 159 lives across six states. Emergency crews are working tirelessly to clear roads and restore essential services. The storm, which struck as a Category 4 hurricane, caused severe destruction, particularly in North Carolina, where nearly half of the deaths occurred. Biden's visit will include aerial surveys of the damage and a briefing at the Raleigh emergency operations center. The recovery is expected to cost billions. ▪️ #Iran launched up to 220 missiles towards #Israel, prompting widespread alerts and sending millions to air raid shelters. The Israeli military, with US support, intercepted most of the missiles though some did hit targets. Iran stated the attack was in response to the killings of #Hezbollah, Hamas leaders, and an Iranian general. Israeli PM #Netanyahu vowed retaliation, and an Israeli response is expected within days. Hurs before the missile strikes, a seemingly unrelated shooting and knife attack in Tel Aviv left seven dead. Police described the incident as a "terror attack," though perpetrators have not been identified. 📍 #Russia has nearly seized control of the city of Vuhledar in #Ukraine’s east after over two years of attempts. Ukrainian troops have withdrawn under heavy fire, with Russian forces using drones, artillery, and thermobaric weapons to devastating effect. Ukrainian defenders faced disorganized retreats due to communication failures, making evacuation increasingly dangerous. Russian military bloggers shared images of flags raised in the city, as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold positions against overwhelming odds. Vuhledar's capture is crucial for Russia's advance toward northern transport hubs. 🇲🇽 Claudia #Sheinbaum has become #Mexico's first female president, promising to enhance women's rights and attract investors. She vowed to ensure economic stability by maintaining an independent central bank and protecting investments. Her administration will focus on budget management to reduce the fiscal deficit while addressing public security and Pemex's financial issues. Sheinbaum also committed to improving public services and enacting reforms to combat gender violence. Follow for more updates.

Good morning. ☕ I hope you all had a safe weekend. Here are some global updates to know as we start the week (9/30): ▪️ #Helene caused widespread devastation across several states, with over 100 fatalities reported. Over two million customers within the Eastern U.S. are still affected by power outages, with the majority located across the Carolinas and Georgia. In Asheville, #NorthCarolina, nearly 100,000 residents may be without running water for weeks. Hundreds of roads in Western North Carolina, including I-26 and I-40, are closed indefinitely. ▪️ The Biden administration is collaborating with #Israel on defenses amid concerns that #Iran may launch an attack following the death of #Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Joint defenses are being bolstered, though the nature of the potential Iranian response remains unclear. Tensions have escalated as Israel continues its strikes against #Hezbollah in #Lebanon. ▪️ Israel conducted a rare airstrike on central #Beirut early this morning, killing three senior leaders of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), marking its first strike on the area since 2006. Israel also expanded its military operations with airstrikes on Houthi targets in #Yemen. Over 1,000 Lebanese are reported dead and one million displaced in recent Israeli strikes. Hezbollah has also confirmed the deaths of several top commanders. Seven senior leaders are believed to have been killed in just over one-week, intensifying fears of a broader conflict. ▪️ Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, stated that the group is prepared for an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon following the death of their leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli strike. He affirmed that Hezbollah remains committed to its resistance against Israel and support for #Gaza. Qassem warned that Israel would fail in its objectives, expressing confidence in Hezbollah's readiness for a prolonged battle. A new leader for Hezbollah will be appointed soon, with Nasrallah’s cousin, Hashem Safieddine, a likely candidate. ▪️ #Japan's incoming prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, is expected to call a snap election on October 27 after his recent victory in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race. Ishiba, a moderate, aims to restore public confidence and address party divisions following his runoff with conservative Sanae Takaichi. He plans to announce his cabinet and key appointments soon, with a focus on addressing economic challenges and strengthening security. Ishiba's leadership may lead to significant policy shifts, including the formation of an "Asian NATO" to counter threats from #China and North Korea. Follow for daily updates and feel free to share with your network. Thanks!
