A big mahalo to Olivier Koning for leading a recent photography seminar with AIA Honolulu of the Alexander & Baldwin headquarters located at 822 Bishop Street in Honolulu. Talented participants captured these beautiful images of our historic building, which recently celebrated its 95th birthday. Here are a few fun facts about 822 Bishop Street: * The project's chief architect was C.W. Dickey, a leading Hawaiian architect of his time, whose uncle was Mr. Samuel Alexander, one of the founders of A&B. * The building includes many Chinese, Mediterranean, Italian Renaissance, Buddhist, Tibetan, Japanese, and Hawaiian elements, and ornamentation. * Visible Chinese influence includes the water buffalo heads on the building exterior, the circular good luck symbols at the main entrance portico (ceiling), and the Chinese character for long life on the columns. * The underwater murals at the entrance to the building depict Hawaiian marine life in Chinese motifs. * Floor tiles resemble a tortoise, an animal that the Chinese revere as the symbol of longevity. * As you enter the lobby, the floor is covered in intricate black Belgian marble. The etched glass behind the reception desk is patterned after the 1928 designs. * An original oil painting by the late Hawaii-born artist Hiroshi Tagami is displayed in our lobby reception area. His commissioned painting, “Keokea,” is for the area of Upcountry Maui that inspired the artist. This painting links our company’s Honolulu headquarters to our Valley Isle roots. * Portraits of A&B’s founders grace our boardroom. (From left to right) Wallace Alexander (son of founder Samuel), Samuel Alexander, Henry Baldwin, and Joseph Cooke. They are surrounded by copies of our annual reports, some of which date back to the early 1900s. Listed on the Hawaii and National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the A&B Building has earned numerous awards, such as the 1978 Outstanding Architectural Design award from the American Institute of Architects Hawaii Chapter, in conjunction with America’s bicentennial.

With our vision to own, operate, and manage local commercial properties in the heart of Hawaii’s business, retail, and industrial communities - Alexander & Baldwin has completed an off-market acquisition of an industrial property in Pearl City, O'ahu. The 81,500-square-foot food distribution facility is fully leased to Hansen Distribution Group, a broadline food service subsidiary of C&S Wholesale Grocers, an industry leader in supply chain solutions and wholesale grocery supply in the United States. Its central location on O'ahu provides ease of access to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Honolulu Harbor and Honolulu’s urban core. “We’re excited to add the Pearl City distribution facility as the newest asset to our portfolio. This acquisition aligns with Alexander & Baldwin’s strategy to expand our commercial real estate portfolio in Hawai'i, focusing on retail, industrial, and ground lease assets,” said Lance Parker, A&B president & CEO. “The asset is fully occupied under a long-term lease to an established food service provider that serves our local community and strengthens our position in O'ahu’s tight industrial market."
