In today’s Friday FAQ we answer the question: What should I do if the hoist I’m meant to use has a stretched open hook? The opening of a hook can be a sign of severe overloading - but the most likely cause is improper attachment of the hook. If a proper attachment is not available, then the hook may be improperly attached causing tip loading and or bending. Alarmingly, tip loading can actually cause the hook to be pried open at a load of less than Rated Capacity. This is possible because the force exerted by the load is multiplied as the hook is loaded outward of the saddle area. Lower hooks can be abused the same as the top hooks but are also subject to side loading. Side loading happens when the hook is attached in a way that causes the hook and shaft to cause bending. Workers may notice the hook bent and try to straighten it by installing it in reverse to bend it back into shape. However, this can bend the hook shank back and forth, weakening it and causing failure later. This is a very serious safety concern as the hook shank can be damaged in the area concealed by the hook block, meaning it’s a hidden danger. Failure without warning from a broken shaft, that was damaged in a previous application, is difficult to diagnose, which again leaves some people to question the integrity of the hook. Periodic inspection of the hook shanks for cracks and imperfection may not be possible as many hoist brands have riveted hook block assemblies that cannot be disassembled. AMH hoists are designed with bolted hook blocks that enable 100% inspection of the hooks as per ASME B30 safety code. This is also for ease of repair as you can replace the hook rather than the entire hook and block assembly. The safest and best hoist for the workplace may be one that is easy to inspect and repair. We're going old school today with a Throwback Thursday - remember those?! It's an excuse for us to say a big THANK YOU to Overhead Crane & Hoist (OCH) Magazine for publishing our warning about unsafe use of eyebolts for non-standard lifts. We cannot keep stating this enough: make sure you're using the correct eyebolts! While a sling and some hooks are usually suitable for a standard lift with easy connections such as a shackle and welded eye or plate, a non-traditional lift like a large motor or a flat gear can be much more challenging. In these cases, AMH recommends rotating hoist rings, as they are specifically designed to lift from the focal point and keep the load centered - traditional eyebolts can tend to sideload. Would you like to know the secret of our success? If you come directly to us to buy lifting equipment, we might not sell it to you! That sounds crazy, but there is a really good reason why: We are a national company, and our products are used to ensure safe and efficient lifting across North America. Lifting is a serious business and therefore we believe that all end users should have strong, expert, LOCAL support. That is why our philosophy is to work with distributors and channel partners who are close to their customers. Over decades we have built a nationwide network of dealers who we trust to deliver extremely high levels of customer service. This starts from the moment you ask about lifting equipment right through to inspection, maintenance, and repair. We also offer that same great service to our channel partners – we support them with high quality products, competitive pricing, and a promise to aim for faster delivery than any of our competitors. We have four strategically located warehouses and fulfilment centers across the USA to support these objectives. So, if you come directly to us to buy lifting equipment, we might not sell it to you. But we will recommend a fantastic local distributor who can supply the equipment and support it in the years to come. Can you save time but still improve safety? We have noticed that more lifting professionals are switching to a better method for adjustable chain slings. We recently introduced the Cartec Inline series of shortening clutches from Stamperia Carcano S.P.A - they're used to reduce the length of the chain legs and prevent the load from becoming unstable. Adjustable chain slings are quite common, but the traditional way of constructing them is changing. The Inline series from Cartec enables riggers to create adjustable slings with far fewer components than the conventional method. Our distributors and channel partners are telling us that this technology is increasingly becoming the equipment of choice for lifting specialists and contractors. This is because of the multiple benefits it brings in terms of productivity, weight saving, and safety.
