In the true “Pittsburgh Way,” we were excited to partner with the ARM Institute, Regional Industrial Development Corporation, Carnegie Mellon University and the Southwestern New Economy Collaborative to host Dr. Lael Brainard, Director of the White House National Economic Council, and showcase the incredible successes and federal investments in southwestern Pennsylvania. Director Brainard had the opportunity to meet with Allegheny Conference Regional Investors, tour the ARM Institute, and hear firsthand from our New Economy Collaborative partners about the impactful activities funded by the Build Back Better Regional Challenge that are growing the region’s robotics cluster. This event highlighted the innovative spirit and collaborative efforts driving economic growth in our region. Thank you to everyone who made this roundtable discussion a success.

About us
The Allegheny Conference on Community Development works with public & private sector leadership to improve the Pittsburgh region's economic future and quality of life. Founded in 1944, the Allegheny Conference is one of the nation's leading economic and community development organizations, combining strong private sector leadership with commitment from public sector partners to move solutions to challenges forward. Our strategic focus is creating a more competitive business climate and marketing the Pittsburgh region for business investment and job creation as well as to attract talent. The Conference relies on the investment of more than 300 companies and organizations (our Regional Investors Council) to provide time, talent and resources to advancing the Pittsburgh region. Great news for southwestern Pennsylvania – a $396 million grant by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will help to decarbonize Pennsylvania’s industrial sector. Administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the grant will seek to reduce industrial carbon emissions by at least 20% per project. Decarbonizing the industrial sector – especially our hard-to-abate industries – is good for our economy and the region’s future. It moves the region toward a more sustainable future by reducing pollution and meeting critical climate change goals while creating new business opportunities and jobs to support the energy transition. https://lnkd.in/epAwzes9

In a POWERful partnership – at the nexus of renewable energy and manufacturing – Nextracker Inc. and JM Steel are growing in the Pittsburgh region. Working together, they are adding more solar energy to the grid while advancing America’s energy independence and security. FUN FACT: Expansions of businesses already established in the Pittsburgh region dominate regional business investment activity – and have for the last 17 years. We commend the bipartisan work of the general assembly and thank Governor Josh Shapiro for signing Senate Bill 831, the Carbon Dioxide Geologic Sequestration Primacy Act. This act established the legal and regulatory framework for carbon dioxide capture and sequestration in Pennsylvania. This framework will help our state decarbonize industries and establish a foundation for a future hydrogen economy. https://lnkd.in/ePCadSqk

Our strategy and research experts recently analyzed business investment announcements across the Pittsburgh region between 2007 and 2023. They found that the expansions of existing businesses in the region routinely accounted for the lion’s share of investment activity – signaling a healthy economy that supports growth and gets votes of confidence from businesses looking to invest in expansion, including job creation. To get more of this growth, we launched a new initiative “Growing Our Own in the Pittsburgh Region” to learn from local employers about their experiences and needs and to support them with services. The $500 million PA SITES program passed in the 2024-2025 Pennsylvania budget provides a major new tool to spur development investment throughout the Pittsburgh region and the state. It will position Pennsylvania to be more competitive than ever when it comes to pad-ready sites that enable projects – including those needing large parcels – to get up out of the ground and do so quickly thanks to significant reforms to permitting legislation. "It’s really an historic investment … allowing the state to work in a very fast and flexible manner,” said Allegheny Conference Chief Growth Officer Matt Smith, who oversees economic development efforts on behalf of the 10-county Pittsburgh region. https://lnkd.in/e2N6TF5P
