Since the 1970s, it has been recognized that sleep apnea can occur in children and it is estimated that 2-4% of children have sleep apnea, but these percentages are likely much lower than the reality. As in adults, sleep apnea often goes unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated in children, with equally, if not more severe, consequences to health, development and well-being. Lack of adherence to Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy is a major issue for patients living with sleep apnea. This means that many struggle to use their PAP machines after being diagnosed with sleep apnea, whether for extended times or not at all. Lack of usage can lead to interruptions in breathing and restful sleep which affects the quality of patient’s health leading to serious health consequences.
