This week, it is two years since Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, died after being arrested by Iran’s Guidance Patrol – the morality police – for wearing her hijab too loosely. Her death triggered a wave of protests throughout the country. Reflecting on this movement, two years on, Kian Tajbakhsh, Visiting Professor, International Relations Program, NYU, and Lecturer, Columbia University's Committee on Global Thought, said: "The "Women, Life, Freedom" movement’s greatest success is empowering millions of Iranian women to defy forced hijab laws, displaying immense courage despite the heavy cost. The next challenge is turning this defiance into lasting legal rights—something the Islamic Republic will resist fiercely—but the movement has shown the way." Two years ago, Tajbakhsh analyzed the "Feminist Social Movement" that emerged in Iran. Listen to the interview he gave to Vis A Vis here: https://lnkd.in/gcw9cMwA

Dear colleagues teaching security studies, IR or nuclear weapons policy or nuclear history in the Fall, training journalists or diplomats on those issues, here are five findings based on the NK team's research and teaching, which I hope will be useful as you prepare for class. 1) Our students always have a hard time grasping and staying with the scale of potential nuclear harm. We have designed this 63 second video thanks to Lyndon Burford, PhD which helps them grasp it. Subtitles are available in 18 languages https://lnkd.in/duEhhPS 2) On the scoping of nuclear weapons policy choices, beyond realism, liberalism and constructivism, here are four recent open access pieces of scholarship emphasizing the constitutive role of imagined futures, lessons from the past and categories used to shape available policy options. https://lnkd.in/dmxNWJH6 https://lnkd.in/d9_QWmuU https://lnkd.in/df7ubQUy https://lnkd.in/dKZ87hyd and a video lecture articulating them https://lnkd.in/de9Vd8RT 3) Regardless of whether you teach traditional or critical security studies, the role of luck in avoiding unwanted nuclear explosions so far is now established. You can include it in lessons on "explaining non-use" alongside deterrence, taboo and tradition explanations. Below are two of the open access pieces we have on the subject. https://lnkd.in/duG5nyar https://lnkd.in/dRhzS-hZ Others are available here https://lnkd.in/guufFhu3 4) If you focus on nuclear harm and nuclear injustices, please do not assume that acknowledging the role of luck in avoiding unwanted nuclear explosions means overlooking the unlucky and actual nuclear harm. Addressing nuclear injustices requires acknowledging luck as well as nuclear harm. And as a matter of fact, the team has done both, thanks to Sébastien Philippe's work on the consequences of testing in Polynesia. For a methodological proposition on how not to minimize either luck or actual nuclear harm, see this https://lnkd.in/dKUC-h8b 5) Kjølv Egeland's book The Struggle for Abolition—on the history of multilateral nuclear disarmament initiatives from the 1960s till today is now available open access here thanks to funding from European Research Council (ERC) for the NUCLEAR project. https://lnkd.in/dqhYb8a3 The hardcopy will be available in a month Do send us relevant material for the Spring! [A post in French and English / Une entrée bilingue français/anglais] 79 years ago, the city of Hiroshima was destroyed by one atomic bomb. In the 2020s, this is the destructive capacity of existing nuclear arsenals in comparison. https://lnkd.in/duEhhPS Il y a 79 ans, la ville d'Hiroshima a été détruite par une bombe atomique.
