alliant National Director Darren John Guillot spoke at the 40th Annual Tax Controversy Conference in Los Angeles last week. Darren joined a panel, that included prominent tax attorneys, to discuss topics which included the IRS’ extensive use of behavioral and psychological science in redesigning collection notices, and strategies for helping high wealth clients – especially those impacted by Sec. 174 amortization. Commissioner Danny Werfel was also at the event and gave the keynote address.   Darren also touched on the IRS’s use of #AI to improve selection of cases for audits and how the AI will increasingly improve as the agency gathers more data.   IRS Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins, whose office has stated that “…taxpayers should not rely on AI-generated responses to complex tax questions,” was also presented with an award at the event. Meet Miles Cantrell, EIT Cantrell! Miles earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and is an Associate Director for our Energy Incentives practice. Miles specializes in the #179D incentive and specifically our clients in the HVAC space and is the lead for the project management group. Our Senior Associate Attorney in our Tax Controversy Services department, Matthew Schultz, shares our CEO Dhaval Jadav's passion for #CancerResearch and bringing #CancerAwareness to others. When Matthew was very young, his father was diagnosed with cancer but fortunately, through treatment, his father was able to defeat his diagnosis. Unfortunately, Matthew lost his grandfather to cancer in 2010, and then his step-father in 2017. Having faced these struggles, he's honored to support others and their families during this difficult journey. This year, Matthew was one of 24 Houston professionals chosen as a Pearl Honoree, where he was recognized at the “Meet the Pearls” kick-off party at Brennan’s!
