Allonnia has been awarded funding to contribute to a rare-earth elements project at U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) funded by the Tri-Service Biotechnology for a Resilient Supply Chain program (Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering & DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center). The demand for REEs has surged due to their critical role in defense and commercial modern technology areas like renewable energy and advanced electronics. However, traditional methods of REE extraction are costly and environmentally taxing. Allonnia’s plans to not only address this challenge but also offer a sustainable path to unlocking these valuable resources from complex waste like acid mine drainage (AMD) that can pollute streams and other waterways. Our team will demonstrate how novel proteins attached to beads can isolate and purify total REEs from complex solutions, such as concentrated leachate from AMD treatment media.
