Empowering families through community. All The Unexpected is a resource for families navigating life's unexpected.
About us
Matrescence, the technical name given to the phycological, emotional and physiological changes that a woman goes through as she becomes a mother, is daunting even under the best of circumstances. But what happens when a woman’s journey takes a turn for the unexpected? Where does she turn to for guidance and support? All The Unexpected will serve as a resource for mothers to look to, feel guided by, supported and generally less alone during what can often be an isolating experience. Through community and a wealth of pooled knowledge we will provide mothers with a platform to empower themselves and others. Empowering mothers through community and dialogue. All The Unexpected is a resource for families navigating life's unexpected.

All The Unexpected reposted this
At 23 weeks pregnant my water broke and I was admitted to the antepartum unit. To say it was a stressful time, would have been an understatement. It was my first exposure to the huge disconnect between hospital policy and patient care. There were so many moments during our 130 day stay where protocol was prioritized over humanity. Trauma in the maternal health space can be incredibly complex. It is often a compounded series of experiences rather than one large traumatic event that leaves the deepest impact. If we want rates of maternal mortality and morbidity to fall then we must prioritize humanity and compassion before we insist on simply following protocol. As we continue to mark Black Maternal Health Week it is imperative we talk about postpartum care. Women's questions and concerns are often brushed aside precisely when they are at their most vulnerable. Rates of mortality and morbidity continue to soar because we aren't addressing this gap in care. In one of our very first episodes ATU Founder Kimberly Reyes sat down and discussed her own, at times harrowing, experience with navigating postpartum care while her daughter spent 109 days in the NICU. As we continue to discuss #womenshistory throughout this month we need to take a look back on the stories of The Mothers of Modern Genecology. The lives of Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey, along with countless other women who involuntarily became the subjects of research have shaped the practice of modern western medicine. We owe them a debt and we honor them by telling these stories. Watch The Documentary at: https://lnkd.in/ejZMaGiu #womenshealth #womenshistorymonth #maternalhealth #blackhistory365
