ALS United Mid-Atlantic is excited to announce Sarah Langs and Mandy Bell will be the featured speakers for our Annual Celebration on Friday, November 15th. Sarah Langs is a researcher for MLB.com based in New York, and Mandy Bell is a reporter based in Cleveland. Thanks to one of their bosses, they arranged to meet at a Spring Training game in 2019, as they both were about to begin their first year working for MLB. Immediately, a life-long, long-distance friendship was born. There’s rarely a day that goes by that the two aren’t texting each other about baseball, whether it be highlights, stats or the wholesome moments with fans, kids or pets that this game gives us. Sarah was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, but rather than that being a hurdle for this relationship, the two have only grown closer. Since then, Sarah was a bridesmaid in Mandy’s wedding, they went to an All-Star Game and the MLB Winter Meetings together and the two traveled to Disney World for Mandy to run a half marathon in order to raise money and awareness for ALS research. The Board and staff of ALS United Mid-Atlantic extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Fred Fisher who passed away on September 10th. As President Emeritus of ALS Network, Fred was a passionate outspoken champion for ALS patients for decades and increased investments in ALS research substantially. His unwavering advocacy for those impacted by the disease led to critical progress toward new clinical trials and treatments. We thank Fred for his invaluable contributions to the ALS cause as we work to achieve a shared mission of a world without ALS.
The ALS Network (formerly ALS Golden West) announces the passing of Fred Fisher, MSW, LCSW. Fred served as president and CEO of the ALS Network from July 2003 to January 2024. He became the organization’s first president emeritus on Feb. 1, 2024. Fred’s tenacious leadership built ALS Network into one of the largest ALS non-profit organizations in the nation - forging dynamic and innovative programs to advance research, advocacy and quality care services for people living with ALS, and their loved ones. We honor Fred for his unparalleled contribution to #ourALScommunity - his ingenuity, compassion and unwavering dedication to our mission benefited tens of thousands of people.
