Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) is a process that occurs when metals, particularly high-strength alloys, become brittle and lose ductility due to the absorption of hydrogen. In the oil and gas industry, this can be particularly problematic in environments where hydrogen is present, such as during certain chemical processes or in sour gas fields. Exposure to Hydrogen: Hydrogen can diffuse into metals during various processes, such as corrosion, electrolysis, or from chemical reactions in sour environments. Stress: The presence of stress (whether from manufacturing, welding, or operational loads) can exacerbate the effects of hydrogen in metals, leading to cracking and failure.
