Sweet cherry growers in Michigan have been issued a USDA disaster declaration following significant crop losses due to weather-related challenges which caused "an explosion of not only spotted wing drosophila, but rapid development of fungi, including cherry leaf spot and American brown rot." This declaration is a critical step in providing growers with much-needed relief and underscores the importance of early detection and rapid response to environmental threats. By leveraging timely interventions, growers can better protect their crops and mitigate future losses.

Central California's dairy industry is facing severe losses as H5N1 bird flu spreads rapidly, infecting 124 dairy herds and resulting in high mortality among cows. As carcasses pile up along roadsides and farms, dairy farmers grapple with the virus’s devastating impact on herd health and milk production, while experts warn the outbreak shows no signs of slowing down.

California is investigating five new possible human cases of bird flu among dairy farm workers, adding to the six previously confirmed cases in the state. The bird flu has spread to 100 dairies in California and 300 nationwide. Specimens from the new potential cases are being sent to the CDC for further testing. We are continuing to monitor this situation as it evolves.
