Have you ever stopped to think about how much more women pay for essential healthcare compared to men? A recent article highlighted this issue, revealing significant disparities from conception and prenatal care to managing menstrual disorders and menopause. Even routine screenings like mammograms and Pap smears come with a higher price tag for women. For example, while a vasectomy, a 15-20 minute procedure, receives over $200 in Medicare rebate, an IUD insertion for women, offering safe, long-acting contraception and often taking longer, is only rebated $75. This forces women to bear extra costs for crucial healthcare services. Women's healthcare has long been neglected, and it's time to prioritise reducing these costs so that women do not have to choose between basic necessities and essential health needs. It’s 2024 yet 74% of women report discomfort discussing leave or flexible work for period symptoms with their managers, and 34% doubt their managers understanding, with another third concerned about career repercussions. Additionally, one in five fear disbelief, highlighting significant workplace challenges. (Survey of union members released on International Women’s Day) Workplaces must prioritise creating inclusive environments that support women during their periods. And here is what we do in our office that you can do! 1. Periods, Periods, Periods. The more we openly chat about periods, the more we normalise the convo! We're all about discussing health, mental well-being, and career goals, so why not periods too? Breaking this taboo is the first step toward empowerment and inclusivity in every workplace. 2. Create flexible working conditions. We know that flexible working conditions are a game-changer for women with menstrual pain. Imagine working comfortably from home with a heating pad—less stress, more productivity, and feeling valued. It's a win-win for well-being and work-life balance! 3. Understand the impacts of periods. Understanding the impacts of periods is crucial; take a moment to research and educate yourself on how painful and disruptive they can be.

Vaginal infections are extremely common, but so are misdiagnoses. In a study conducted in 2006, it was found that 61% of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and 77% of yeast infection diagnoses were incorrect. So how can you tell the difference? Bacterial vaginosis is caused by pathogenic bacteria, whereas vaginal yeast infections are caused by the fungus Candida. Since these two conditions stem from different types of organisms—bacteria vs. fungus—it’s essential to recognize their distinct symptoms to seek the correct treatment. Symptoms to Differentiate Between BV and Yeast Infections: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): 💧 Thin, grey or white discharge 🐟 Strong fishy odour, especially after intercourse 🌸 Vaginal itching or irritation Yeast Infection: 🧀 Thick, white discharge resembling cottage cheese 🚫 No significant odour 🔥 Intense itching and burning sensation in the vaginal area 🍅 Redness and swelling around the vulva It’s of course crucial to ensure you consult your healthcare professional https://lnkd.in/ez58qg5v

Did you know that women spend 25% more of their lives in debilitating health compared to men? For many diseases, diagnosis comes later in life for women than for men. This gender health gap results in 75 million years of life lost each year due to poor health or early death. Imagine the impact of closing this gap: the 3.9 billion women worldwide could gain an additional seven healthy days each year, or an average of 500 extra healthy days over a lifetime. Addressing this issue is not just a healthcare imperative but a societal one. By prioritising women's health through better research, improved healthcare access, and increased awareness, we can bridge this gap and enhance the quality of life for millions of women globally. https://lnkd.in/g-EpmHMj
