The AM Call: Scary Movie? Major equity indices snapped a six-week winning streak to close lower for the week while Treasury yields rose, with the 10Y back to nearly 4.25%. Looking ahead, we recommend clients prepare for more volatility and uncertainty as we approach the U.S. Presidential election. We note that the polling website fivethirtyeight.com shows 4 of the of the 7 swing states (PA, MI, WI, NV, NC, GA, AZ) are statistically dead even. Given the very close nature of the race, we think there’s a material chance that the final results of the election are not known for several days or even longer, as these states tabulate ballots and/or there is litigation over election results. More than anything else, financial markets hate uncertainty, so we remain cautious in the near term. We note that equities have posted a 23% year-to-date gain, so a pullback at some point is inevitable. Read more by visiting the link below.

The AM Call: Shake It Off For this week’s AM Call we use a classic title from TayTay, since her Eras Tour came to our hometown of Miami this weekend. Indeed, it’s been just that kind of year for the markets. So far this year, we have highlighted concerns over the path of interest rates, the sustainability of corporate earnings, heightened global geopolitical risk, a contentious U.S. Presidential election, and worries over the U.S. budget deficit and growing debt burden. And yet, financial markets have shaken it off. For the year-to-date, equities have posted double-digit gains, while fixed income is up by mid-single digits over the same period.
