Join us for our next webinar on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024 at NOON Eastern / 9 AM Pacific. This webinar is titled “NW Natural Gas Interceptor Trench Remediation Project Portland, Oregon.” FREE to all AAEES Members. $40 fee for non-members. https://lnkd.in/gdF26iem The webinar will describe the initial work begun in 2009 to clean up and remediate a former manufactured-gas plant site located directly on banks of the Willamette River in Portland Oregon. The site soils are contaminated with high levels of volatile organic compounds including F-002 listed hazardous solvents, naphthalene, cyanide, heavy metals, high levels of soluble iron, and mechanically emulsified oils. We will describe the method used to intercept contaminated groundwater flowing through the site from reaching the river, which fluctuates with daily tides and by seasonally. That groundwater containing a variable “chemical soup” is pretreated in two plants: one for hazardous wastewater and one for nonhazardous wastewater before being combined and sent to the main plant for further processing and discharge to the river. Recent changes to groundwater flow necessitated the design of a new trench system to intercept and treat a new more concentrated waste stream within the existing process, while still maintaining the original operation which must operate 24/7/365. We will describe the design approach taken to overcome the initial and more recent challenges posed by a continually changing waste stream with a wide range of contaminants and a final discharge governed by very restrictive discharge limits. We will also include lessons learned. The plant has operated continuously since 2013. The more recent improvements began operating on the same 24/7/365 basis since 2022. Webinar Format This will be an interactive session with "live chat" capability. The session is open to environmental engineering and science professionals across all sectors and career stages. Our objective is to offer special insights on leading edge solutions for graduate and undergraduate students as well as early to mid-career environmental professionals who are considering specialty certification. AAEES Board Certified Individuals: Attend this event and earn 1.5 PDHs towards your PDH requirements for maintaining your specialty certification. #boardcertified #environmentalengineering #environmentalscience #siteremediation #groundwater ##sustainability #wastewater

Time is up! The deadline is TOMORROW! Have you nominated yourself or someone else for The AAEES 40 under 40 Recognition Program yet? https://lnkd.in/eNyaaZxP This program was introduced to recognize talented individuals who have, either personally or as part of a team, been responsible for helping to advance the fields of Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering in a demonstrable way within the last 12 months. A nominee must be under 40 at the end of the calendar year in which they are nominated.

Wise words from Professor Daniel B. Oerther, BCEE/S, DLAAS, FAAN(h) on how you can secure certification in additional specialities. Join us Sept. 4th for a webinar dedicated to learning about the AAEES #BoardCertification process. https://lnkd.in/eTty9zJy

#LevelUp! Are you #BoardCertified with the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists? Did you know that you can secure certification in ADDITIONAL SPECIALITIES? For example, in 2005, I became a #BCEE in water/wastewater, and in 2018, I became a #BCES in biology (I have a BA in biology, in addition to a BS in environmental engineering). This year, in 2024, I obtained my second speciality in engineering - I'm now recognized for my work in #SUSTAINABILITY! In my view, sustainability is a must add specialization in the 21st century! Sure, I know my way around a clarifier design... AND I consider greenhouse gas emissions and energy utilization as part of my work! Facts: 1) AAEES membership is $125; 2) BC is $225; 3) each additional speciality is $50. I'm a #PE in #Ohio and #Missouri (and for a while in DC, when I worked there). If I'm willing to pay about $50/year to maintain a license in multiple jurisdictions, I'm also willing to pay about $50/year to demonstrate multiple advanced specialties! If you'd like to know more about how to demonstrate your additional knowledge and skills in a second speciality, I encourage you to join us on September 4 for my webinar on #BoardCertification (see: https://lnkd.in/gMBBxxH5).

Beginning in just a few minutes.... Join us as we showcase several of our 40 under 40 Recognition Program recipients using a popular Japanese-inspired presentation format called a PechaKucha. FREE to all AAEES members. Reserve your spot here: https://lnkd.in/eNMBPhAz What exactly is a PechaKucha? A PechaKucha celebrates people, passion and creative thoughts. The event will consist of four speakers each showing 20 slides and presenting for about 6 and a half minutes. We will have a few minutes in between each presentation from some Q & A. You will gain knowledge on four different topics in under an hour! 1. Microplastic Pollution 2. Data Driven Approaches for Understanding Oil and Gas Well Integrity 3. Using Low Dissolved Oxygen for Energy-Efficient Biological Nitrogen Removal 4. Nanoscale Abrasive Wear of Plastics as a Neglected Pathway for Releasing Nanoplastics #pechakucha #40under40 #environmentalengineer #environmentalscience
