Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are increasing among children, especially those ages 2-4. Mycoplasma pneumoniae isn’t typically a leading cause of pneumonia in pediatric populations. The CDC recommends that pediatricians swab both the throat and the nasopharynx of patients suspected to have pneumonia to increase the likelihood of detecting mycoplasma pneumoniae, as well as prescribe antibiotics that are effective against the strain. Yesterday, AAP President Dr. Ben Hoffman joined leaders from American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American College of Physicians, American Psychiatric Association and American Osteopathic Association on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and their staff to discuss urgent health care needs affecting patients, their families and physicians. The leaders discussed numerous important issues, including improving low Medicaid payment rates and protecting children online through the Kids Online Safety Act.

AAP, in a new policy statement, calls for the creation of universal paid family and medical leave to care for a newborn or sick family member. Research shows paid leave has major health benefits to both the baby and the parents – including lower rates of preterm birth, higher rates of breastfeeding, reduced child mortality rates, and decreased rates of postpartum depression. An updated policy from AAP says that cheerleaders should be treated like student athletes and benefit from the same protections and medical oversight as other athletes. Despite the large number of athletes in the sport, cheerleading is not recognized as a sport federally or by the NCAA which means there’s less oversight and enforcement of safety protocols. As student athletes, cheerleaders should receive routine physical exams, supervision by qualified coaches certified in training and stunts, and age-appropriate safety guidelines.
