Banks in the BaaS space face dilemmas about whether this line of business should operate as a separate unit in the institution and how to source specialized talent to fill it. They must calculate whether the expense of bringing in outside risk planning expertise, buying monitoring systems or building technology such as application programming interfaces is worth the return. There are non-monetary costs as well, such as navigating more rigorous and nuanced questions from their regulators. "Be prepared to take a lot of the money you make initially and invest it back into your infrastructure," said Curt Queyrouze of Coastal Community Bank.
