American Bird Conservancy, Birds Canada, National Audubon Society, and RedLAC were present last week at the 2024 RedLAC Congress in Saint Lucia to present the Conserva Aves initiative as an innovative method to address twin crises of our time: biodiversity loss and climate change. By conserving forests, protecting areas for birds and other wildlife, and implementing other natural solutions to address climate change, the Conserva Aves initiative is poised to be a critical tool for achieving 30x30, a worldwide initiative for governments to designate 30% of Earth's land and ocean area as protected areas by 2030. With the support of RedLAC and its conservation funds across Latin America and the Caribbean, we can drive real action to preserve ecosystems and protect our planet. 🌎 Conserva Aves is a partnership led by the above organizations and BirdLife International. 📷 Greg Spira (BirdsCanada), Daniel Lebbin (American Bird Conservancy), Sebastian Herzog (Audubon), and Cecilia Vides (Fondo de Inversión Ambiental de El Salvador). 🦜 Swipe left for bonus bird photos by Dan Lebbin! #ConservaAves #30by30 #ConservationPartnerships

🌙 Once, the Whip-poor-will's mysterious song filled the night skies across central and southeastern North America. Now, its haunting call is fading as this nocturnal bird slowly disappears across its range. The Whip-poor-will, along with other nightjars like the Chuck-will’s-widow and Common Nighthawk, is facing alarming declines due to habitat loss, pesticides, and other human-caused threats. Curious about how you can help save these elusive species? Join American Bird Conservancy’s FREE webinar on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 4:00 PM ET (1:00 PM PT) to discover their stories and learn about what ABC and our partners are doing to ensure a future for nightjars. 🗓️ Register now! 🎟️ https://lnkd.in/gVtBDCCs If you can't make the webinar live, RSVP now, and we'll send you a recording to enjoy when the time is right for you. #Nightjar #BirdConservation #Whippoorwill #Nighthawk MassWildlife Jordan E. Please welcome our next featured Conservation and Justice Fellow, Dr. Koyana Flotte (Ph.D.)! Koyana is an anthropologist (Sociocultural Anthropology, Harvard University) and, as a member of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas, a cultural bearer from the Native American border communities of La Junta in present-day Presidio, Texas-Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. Koyana is also a consultant for the BIG BEND CONSERVATION ALLIANCE as an Indigenous programs curator. As Big Bend Bird Conservation and Culture Fellow, Dr. Flotte will work at Tapalcomes in present-day Redford, Texas. Tapalcomes is an ancient migration pathway, and Koyana’s work will be the first conservation project on this land, which is now owned by People of La Junta for Preservation, a Native-led and newly formed nonprofit organization based in Presidio, Texas. The initial phase of this ongoing initiative will focus on monitoring birds, storytelling, and community engagement. Through interviews, expert consultations, and site visits, Dr. Flotte aims to gather diverse perspectives and local knowledge about birds and the ecosystems where they live — to bridge the gap between local ecology and the natural history of the Big Bend region and amplify Indigenous voices, stories, and languages. #ConservationAndJustice #TogetherForBirds #LaJunta #ConservationAndCulture #BirdConservation #AnthropologistsInConservation #AppliedAnthropology

In our work to conserve wild birds and their habitats, American Bird Conservancy strives to work with and honor Indigenous communities and sovereignty. We are proud to partner with many tribal nations and Indigenous communities across the Western Hemisphere, including the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, with whom we’ve collaborated since 2013 to conserve the unique habitats of their beautiful lands in northwestern Minnesota. Together, we’ve completed habitat projects on over 3,000 acres of forest and brushland habitat — benefitting declining bird species like the Golden-winged Warbler and American Woodcock. Our partnership highlights the deep connection between Indigenous stewardship and sustainable conservation. True to its name, our Bird of the Week thrives in rugged areas: boulder-strewn slopes, canyons, and cliffs. They nest in cracks and crevices out of sight, but it’s usually still easy to locate a breeding pair. 👀 What distinctive feature marks a Rock Wren’s nest site? 🪨 Rock Wrens adorn their nesting area with a telltale pathway of small rocks, sticks, and pebbles. This stony trail, which may help provide drainage to the site, extends into the nest crevice. A small stack of rocks at the crevice entrance reduces the size of the opening, which may provide extra protection from predators and nest parasites. https://bit.ly/3U1cKs0 #RockWren #BirdOfTheWeek

Today, Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced the Migratory Bird Protection Act (MBPA) and Albatross and Petrel Conservation Act. American Bird Conservancy celebrates the introduction of these bills, which reinforce protections for migratory birds and imperiled seabird species, such as the Waved Albatross and Pink-footed Shearwater. 🎉 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gDsiTxk5 and ask your U.S. Representatives and Senators to support the Migratory Bird Protection Act and Albatross and Petrel Conservation Act at https://lnkd.in/g7d28rr3. #MigratoryBirdProtectionAct #AlbatrossAndPetrelConservaitonAct #ActionAlert #BirdConservation

Grassland birds — among the most imperiled of all bird groups — could get much-needed support from a bill recently introduced in the United States Congress. The North American Grasslands Conservation Act would provide a lifeline to struggling grassland and shrub-steppe ecosystems, creating a voluntary, incentive-driven program modeled on the highly successful North American Wetlands Conservation Act. Beloved birds like the Eastern Meadowlark have declined dramatically, losing 75% of their population since the 1970s. Habitat loss is one of the leading drivers of these declines. If passed, the North American Grasslands Conservation Act would support not only the conservation of critical and threatened grassland ecosystems but would also strengthen climate resilience while benefiting the farmers, ranchers, Tribal Nations, and rural communities that rely on these lands. #Grasslands #GrasslandBirds #NorthAmericanGrasslandsConservationAct #BirdConservation

The chill in the air. The leaves crunching under your feet on your morning walk. Pumpkin spice everything. Fall — or as many call it, “spooky season,” — has officially arrived. 👻 🎃 For birds, fall can be an especially spooky time of year. Many species are winging their way south, some on epic journeys stretching thousands of miles, and they face some terrifying threats along the way! As we humans pull our sweaters and decorations out of storage and prepare to welcome friends and family to our homes to celebrate the holidays, we can do a few things to make our homes welcoming to birds, too. ❤️ 🦉 👉 Click through for a few ways to make your yard less spooky for birds this season.
