  • Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise's featured article of the month by Leroux et al. ✨ In “NHANES 2011-2014: Objective Physical Activity Is the Strongest Predictor of All-Cause Mortality," Leroux and colleagues demonstrate that objectively measured physical activity, assessed using wrist-worn accelerometers, is the strongest predictor of all-cause mortality in a nationally representative sample from the United States population, validating previous findings from the UK Biobank. Accelerometry data were collected in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) continuously for up to seven days between 2011 and 2014, with mortality tracked through 2019. The analysis focused on participants aged 50 and 80 years (N=3653, 24298 person-years of follow-up, 416 deaths). The findings underscore the critical role of physical activity in human health; highlight its importance as a modifiable risk factor; and emphasize the need for innovative, objective ways of measuring it and the potential utility of incorporating wearable-derived measurements in clinical practice.
