Trees are on the move! Trees migrate slowly — generation by generation — to keep up with shifting climate conditions. But with climate change accelerating, they may not be able to keep up with rapid change. That’s where assisted seed migration comes in — a strategy through which researchers and forest managers help trees "move" to climate-adapted locations. By planting species in areas where they’re better suited for future conditions, we may be able to create resilient forests ready to face tomorrow's challenges. While the approaches to assisted seed migration vary, American Forests is proud to support projects using sound science to make strategic decisions for implementing assisted seed migration on the ground. We lead the movement to reforest America, from cities to large, forested landscapes.
About us
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. Its mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. In the past 25 years alone, American Forests has planted nearly 50 million trees in more than 1,000 high-impact forest restoration projects. These projects have restored hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, protected vital watersheds and sequestered millions of tons of greenhouse gases. American Forests is also one of the nation’s leading advocates for expanding urban tree canopy and green space, and a key funder of urban forest initiatives that have transformed communities across the country. Wildfire restoration = hope for communities. Honored to tell the story of the communities in Oregon impacted by severe wildfires, as well as the potential for recovery and future economic and recreational prosperity offered by partners like the USDA Forest Service, American Forests, Collins, Clifbar coming together to develop a new pathway forward for forest restoration. If you haven't already, check out the story on restoration in South Central Oregon beautifully written by Cameron Walker. It features a short film I directed and produced. Andrew Studer was our Director of Cinematography and Editing who worked closely with our other fantastic Cinematographer Nick Grier.
After wildfires, forests undergo significant changes, and surrounding communities face challenges related to loss of homes and infrastructure, as well as economic opportunities and places for recreation. But thanks to partners like Clif Bar, we're making a difference. Through their renewed commitment to wildfire restoration efforts and support of the REPLANT Act, the CLIF Bar brand continues its 20-year legacy of partnering with American Forests to restore wildfire-impacted areas like the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Oregon. Where do you shine your light? It has been an inspiring few days in #Spokane, Washington for the second in-person Learning Lab for the Washington State Tree Equity Collaborative. My favorite quote from yesterday’s event at the John A Finch Arboretum - “We shine our light on our partners”. This ethos, shared by Angel Spell from City of Spokane, captures the true spirit of the event, of the Collaborative, and of the #TreeEquity movement writ large. As I reflect this morning, I couldn’t be more proud to shine our light on the partners who made this event happen, and who work tirelessly every day to achieve our shared vision of Tree Equity in every city across Washington State: -The Lands Council and their fearless leader Amanda Parrish -Spokane Tribe of Indians’s DNR forest ecologist Emma Greenwood -SPOKANE TRIBAL NETWORK for their beautiful opening remarks -City of Spokane Parks and Recreation and Urban Forestry department staff, including Urban Forester Katie Kosanke -USDA Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest UCF coordinator Stephen Baker -Last but not least, Michael Liang and Michael Sanborn from Washington State Department of Natural Resources. Thank you to these partners, and for all cities that participated - City Of Moses Lake, City Of Ritzville, City Of Walla Walla, and many others. The future of #TreeEquity is bright in #Washington!

An important part of bridging the tree gap in communities to achieve #TreeEquity is to mobilize action in communities. 🌳 This week, we’re in Spokane, WA, for a Tree Equity Collaborative Learning Lab — a workshop focused on partnerships and collaboration to scale up urban tree efforts. Together, we’re building skills and connections to increase tree canopy and address climate justice across Washington State. Thank you to our partners, such as Washington State Department of Natural Resources - Hilary Franz, (who are celebrating all of October as Urban and Community Forestry month), Csenka Favorini-Csorba, City of Spokane, SPOKANE TRIBAL NETWORK, Spokane Tribe of Indians, The Lands Council, for working together to further our collective hashtag #TreeEquity goals! Want to get involved or start a Tree Equity collaborative in your state? Reach out to learn more!

The need for cohesive action is greater than ever to battle extreme heat and extreme tree canopy inequities. The only way forward is together. I am very proud to be a part of the Phoenix Metro Urban Forestry Roundtable leadership. Together we are working to better our region and create more resilient and sustainable communities. 🌳 Building Tree Equity in Maricopa County 🌳 We’re proud to share how the Phoenix Metro Urban Forestry Roundtable — a coalition formed in 2019 by American Forests, the City of Phoenix, and the Arizona Sustainability Alliance — is making strides toward a greener, cooler future. 🌞 Together, they’re tackling extreme heat and improving Tree Equity by uniting dozens of partners across the region. With committees focused on workforce development, business partnerships, species selection, and nursery capacity, they are actively working to create lasting change. The Tree Equity Municipalities Toolkit, now nearing completion, will ensure communities stay aligned and grow sustainably. 🌱 Read article here ➡️ https://loom.ly/PyJitW4 Here’s to creating a more resilient and livable Phoenix! 🌵 #TreeEquity #UrbanForestry #Sustainability
