About us

AGU is a global community supporting more than half a million advocates and professionals in Earth and space sciences. Through broad and inclusive partnerships, AGU aims to advance discovery and solution science that accelerate knowledge and create solutions that are ethical, unbiased and respectful of communities and their values. Our programs include serving as a scholarly publisher, convening virtual and in-person events and providing career support. We live our values in everything we do, such as our net zero energy renovated building in Washington, D.C. and our Ethics and Equity Center, which fosters a diverse and inclusive geoscience community to ensure responsible conduct. AGU was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences for more than 50 years. We were independently incorporated in 1972.

Updates

  • For this month’s “AGU Monthly Volunteer Spotlight,” we are thrilled to recognize Denise J. Hills, a recent Chair of the Position Statement Committee – the volunteer group overseeing the process of creating and updating AGU’s extensive catalog of position statements – Denise has seen volunteer work shape many aspects of her varied and exciting career path. As a member since 2008, her dedication and enthusiasm have made a significant impact on AGU and beyond. Denise notes that the AGU people are the reason she keeps saying “yes” when asked to volunteer. She has found great joy in the diversity of perspectives and friendships that she has found in AGU members, volunteers, and staff. Join us in celebrating Denise’s extraordinary contribution. Dear colleagues, we would like to invite you to participate in the Business Meeting of the “Task Team on Global Policy Advice” of the Global Geoscience Societies with the title: How can we succeed in raising the prominence of the geosciences on the global policy agenda? This event will take place during the International Geological Congress in Busan, Korea (https://lnkd.in/eyci2Sbp) on Monday 26 August, 16.00-17:30 in meeting room M217 of the BEXCO Congress Center. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dgygxyzA (number 12), by clicking on the “Go to application” button on the right side of the web page. This is a free event, and the deadline for registration is Friday, August 16, but you can also attend without registering.  Convener(s) Ed Robeck (American Geosciences Institute) Yamirka Rojas-Agramonte (International Union of Geological Sciences) Elena Robinson (American Geophysical Union) Alexander Rudloff (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics John Ludden (International Union of Geological Sciences)   Panelist Janice Lachance (American Geophysical Union)   Munira Raji (Sustainable Earth Institute, University of Plymouth? Ester Sztein (Geological Society of America) Michael Kehinde (Environment Agency UK)   Description As themes of climate change, environment, hazards, energy, and resources dominate global headlines, the need for sound, timely, and digestible scientific advice in public policymaking is on the rise. Many scientific unions and societies representing the breadth of the geoscience community are working to put geoscience at the heart of emergent and evolving policy topics by operating some kind of science-policy function. Through the promotion of evidence-informed solutions to global societal challenges, these organizations aim to integrate geoscience into global policy considerations. But are they delivering? In this debate, we aim to explore the challenges and successes experienced by geoscience unions and societies around the world as they engage in various ways with the processes of science policy development and application at all levels of society (i.e., from the local to the international level). It will discuss whether such representative organizations meet the expectations of the communities they represent in the field of geosciences and related activities such as education, resource management, production, and infrastructure development.
