Historic redlining has had long-lasting effects on health-related outcomes, suppressing economic opportunity, human capital, and societal contributions—particularly for racial and ethnic minorities in urban areas. From 1934 to the 1960s, the Federal Housing Administration and Home Owner’s Loan Corporation promoted racially discriminatory mortgage practices, creating systemic barriers that persist today. These racist policies have resulted in enduring health disparities, including limited health care access, higher risks of fatal conditions, and poorer maternal and infant outcomes. A cohort study revealed a higher preterm birth rate in historically redlined areas, underscoring how redlining impacts maternal health. Black women continue to face disproportionate maternal mortality rates due to factors like cardiovascular and pulmonary complications. The effects of redlining extend beyond maternal health. Asthma exacerbations are higher in formerly redlined neighborhoods due to environmental factors like air pollution and industrialization, while Black patients with HIV often experience delayed viral suppression compared with those living in nonredlined areas. A new study reveals that disparities in outcomes for children with amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” are linked to the age at which they are diagnosed. Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in children, affecting 2% of the population. The study highlights that younger age at diagnosis, higher socioeconomic status, and private insurance were associated with better treatment outcomes. To address inequities in care, interventions are needed that promote earlier diagnosis and increase access to pediatric eye screenings, particularly in underserved communities. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently released its updated biennial report on breast cancer statistics, highlighting the urgent need for addressing racial, ethnic, and social disparities in screening and treatment. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, but for Black and Hispanic women, it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. This report underscores the need for systemic efforts to ensure equitable access to screening and treatment for all women, particularly those in underserved communities.
