The APA was invited to comment at a televised Town Hall about the insurance crisis in Florida. As usual, we were there to discuss the issue of insurer fraud & the failure of the state’s leadership/regulatory apparatus to hold insurance industry accountable to existing regulations and laws. The “expert panel“ was stacked in favor of the insurance industry, including a state representative and the CEO of an insurance company. Not a single consumer advocate was on the panel. Upon watching the video, it is apparent that the moderator was not happy about the APA deviating from the message of how well the state of Florida is handling the crisis and how resolving the problem is the responsibility of policyholders. The APA will not be muted. Notice the body language & physical reaction of the moderator: pulling the mic away, turning his back to pass the focus to the state representative who tried to portray the narrative that Florida having a lot of regulations on the books means they are effectively regulating. The moderator then tries to change the subject, but the APA keeps going: making the point that you can have all the regulation in the world, but if you don’t enforce it to hold the insurance industry accountable, it’s all just words on paper. The APA will continue to advocate for policyholders & carry our message that fraud happens on ALL sides & needs to be enforced on ALL sides (including insurers). We will not be stopped.
