Recently, APPA's President and CEO, Scott Corwin, was on the road again, attending The Northern California Power Agency (NCPA)'s Annual Conference in Napa, California. It was great to listen to insightful panels and catch up with friends at the meeting. Many thanks to Randy Howard, Jane Cirrincione, Scott Tomashevsky, and all the NCPA members. #PublicPower #NCPA

This week, members of the APPA’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) program board visited the power plant at Manitowoc Public Utilities. The plant received funding from a DEED grant that was awarded and completed in 2022. The funding was used to study the transition from burning fossil fuels to burning a Wisconsin-recognized renewable fuel pellet source. Both plant boilers have had long-term successful runs on these pellets, which are made from industrial paper and plastic secondary materials that would otherwise be landfill-bound. #PublicPower

The destruction of #Helene cannot be understated. #PublicPower utilities like Greenville Utilities Commission have made significant progress in restoring power and rebuilding their communities. Through #MutualAid, utility crews are continuing to help restore service as quickly and safely as possible in hard-hit areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. As we’ve seen before, the public power response to this storm has been overwhelming – with more than 500 personnel descending on the affected regions from 14 states. #MutualAid #CommunityPowered
As we gear up to celebrate #PublicPower and #PublicNaturalGas Week (Oct. 6-12), we want to pause to thank those who are working sunrise to sunset and through the night to assist our neighbors to the west with recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene. We are proud to join other public utilities from North Carolina and across the country in supporting our neighbors in this difficult time. Some of our GUC crews answered the call for help and hit the road on Friday, September 27th, and more of our crews have since joined them. Mutual aid is one of the many benefits of being part of a public power community. Please join us in thanking all the crews who have left their homes and families to assist those in need.

The Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council provided a recent update on power restoration efforts following #HurricaneHelene, which caused catastrophic damage across 10 states, impacting nearly 6 million electricity customers in total. “It is devastating to see the catastrophic damage this hurricane has wrought in communities across the Southeast,” said APPA's President & CEO, Scott Corwin. “Working with our industry and government partners, public power has sprung into action – activating our mutual aid network with a goal of getting the power back on as quickly and safely as possible. While it will be a long road to recovery – requiring significant rebuilding in many places – we will persist until the job is done.” https://ow.ly/JKmK50TBAHL #PublicPower #MutualAid
