One hundred twenty-five years of service to its community is a major milestone for a #PublicPower #utility to reach! Yesterday, APPA's Senior Vice President, Membership & Marketing, Jeff Haas, had the privilege of presenting Wallingford Dept. of Public Utilities' Director of Public Utilities, Rick Hendershot, with APPA’s Century Award for its 125th Anniversary providing electricity to the community of Wallingford, Connecticut. It was great to be part of their celebration acknowledging an impressive milestone. #PublicPower

During #PublicPowerWeek, we want to showcase how #PublicPower is proud to aid their communities and neighbors through #MutualAid. Recently, APPA's President & CEO, Scott Corwin, presented commendations to CPS Energy at their Board of Trustees meeting in San Antonio, as part of APPA's Mutual Aid Commendation Program. This program recognizes utilities that have answered the call for assistance and aided another utility in restoring power to its customers within the past 12 months. We're grateful to CPS Energy and all Public Power utilities in the public power mutual aid network. #CommunityPowered

During #PublicPowerWeek we wanted to highlight this great article from The Florida Times-Union I Jacksonville.com about JEA's lineworkers and how storm season often brings long days for their crews. We're grateful to all #PublicPower lineworkers for their diligent service to their communities. Our thoughts are with the crews working tirelessly to restore power in Florida after Hurricane Milton and in the hardest-hit areas recovering from Hurricane Helene. Our thoughts are with the residents and communities in Florida in the path of Hurricane #Milton. #MutualAid is about neighbors helping neighbors—even when those neighbors are fellow utilities hundreds (or thousands) of miles away. APPA's staff and the volunteer leaders of our Mutual Aid Committee work year-round to plan and coordinate the response to major events like this so that emergency crews and materials can be mobilized as they are now through the national #PublicPower mutual aid network. #CommunityPowered #ThankALineworker #BeSafe
The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and public power communities across Florida are preparing for Hurricane Milton, anticipated to make landfall late Wednesday into Thursday morning along the west coast. As one of the strongest storms in recorded history, Milton is expected to hit as a major hurricane, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Milton is forecast to maintain hurricane strength as it travels across the peninsula and exits the east coast. We have mobilized a restoration workforce that has grown to more than 2,500 personnel from 22 states, including Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. Crews comprised of damage assessors, line technicians, vegetation crews and support are pre-staged near affected areas to assess storm damage and restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Crews across Florida’s public power communities will work throughout the day and night to restore outages as long as conditions permit, and they will resume restoration efforts as soon as it is safe to do so. While Florida public power utilities are prepared, customers across the state should prepare for extended power outages. We urge all Floridians to heed the guidance of local emergency management officials. To ensure the safety of restoration crews, disconnect any nonessential electrical equipment to avoid overloading circuits. Residents should also familiarize themselves with safe generator operation to ensure the safety of those in the home and utility personnel. Stay away from downed power lines and report downed lines directly to your local electric utility. #FLPublicPower #PublicPower #MutualAid #Milton
