Why segmental? It’s a question our organization gets asked often. Since the first long-span segmental bridge was built in 1973, more than 450 segmental bridges have been built in the U.S., and concrete segmental bridges have been used for highway, transit, rail and pedestrian use. With numerous advantages and a range of construction methods, segmental concrete bridges are economical, durable and aesthetically pleasing while providing minimum impact to traffic and the surrounding environment both during and after construction. Get the 101 on concrete segmental with our recently updated materials below.

About us
The American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) was incorporated in 1989 as a nonprofit organization to provide a forum where owners, designers, constructors, and suppliers can meet to further refine current design, construction and construction management procedures, and evolve new techniques that will advance the quality and use of concrete segmental bridges. ASBI is a unique organization in that all components of the bridge construction industry are included as members.

Today is Dictionary Day, and we’re celebrating today with an educational post! Every industry has its own set of unique words and jargon, and the segmental bridge field is no different! Your entry of the day – Beam and Winch. Beam and Winch – Custom-made segment hoisting equipment consisting of a longitudinal beam fitted with lifting pulleys, tackle, and winches, and attached to the end of a cantilever. After erecting one segment, the equipment is advanced to the next position in order to hoist the next segment. A beam and winch are used in balanced cantilever or progressive cantilever erection. Want to learn more terms like this one? Check out our Construction Practices Handbook below. Chapter Two is focused on terminology, including special segmental bridge terms. https://lnkd.in/g3G4sTM5 #ASBI #AmericanSegmentalBridgeInstitute

It’s Risk Awareness Week, an annual event that brings together professionals from various fields to discuss risk management strategies. One asset that ASBI maintains is its Durability Survey. This document identified over 450 bridges in the NBI database run by Federal Highway Administration that qualify as being segmentally constructed concrete. In the report, condition ratings based on inspection data are evaluated and conclusions are provided. In general, concrete segmental bridges are performing very well. Follow the link below to access the survey and learn about the risks and safety protocols present in the concrete segmental industry. https://lnkd.in/eARrRdrd #ASBI #AmericanSegmentalBridgeInstitute #RiskAwarenessWeek #RiskAwareness #bridge
