American Society for Microbiology

It is my honor to represent my organization American Society for Microbiology (ASM) at the IUMS - International Union of Microbiological Societies meeting this year in Florence, Italy. I had a chance to present the work that Dr. Rino Rappuoli and I have been working together in the past year to identify microbial solutions to address climate change. I also met with wonderful scientists Drs. Lisa Y. Stein , Amy C. Shurtleff, PhD, Dilfuza Egamberdieva who join us on a great panel discussion yesterday. It is also very nice to see keys figures and leaders at the meeting who I have been working closely with in the past few years to promote the climate change work such as Drs. Rita Colwell and Arturo Casadevall. Our goal at the meeting is to bring forward a positive message: despite the destructive potential microbes can bring, microbes hold a great power to solve many challenges that we face today, including climate change. We welcome many positive responses toward this concept and look forward to bring forward concrete actions in the near future. Last week, ASM was honored to designate the the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University as a “Milestones in Microbiology” site for its many research accomplishments that have had broad international impact on fundamental and translational microbiology. 🎊👏 Since its inception, the university’s department of microbiology and immunology has been at the forefront of microbial science research, collaborating with pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and community physicians to improve the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases around the world.
