Millions of Americans with cancer likely struggle to access some of the most advanced, state-of-the-art treatments being tested in clinical trials for their disease, according to our new analysis. The 2023 State of Cancer Care in America Snapshot and corresponding manuscript found 70% of U.S. counties lack a single active cancer treatment trial, and a quarter of adults over 55— the age group most diagnosed with the disease—would have to travel more than two hours round-trip to access a trial site with broad cancer offerings. Additionally, 90% of adult patients do not participate in clinical trials at all, and only half of all patients nationwide had access to a trial at their cancer care facility. The study is published in JCO Oncology Practice and accompanied by an infographic. More: https://brnw.ch/21wNoLI #JCOOP

Patients residing in the frontier region of southwest Montana will now have access to cancer infusion services closer to home thanks to a partnership between Barrett Hospital & HealthCare, Bozeman Health Cancer Center, and Montana State University. The new infusion center, part of our Increasing Access to Cancer Care in Rural Montana program, is using an innovative hub-and-spoke care delivery model to provide remote services for patients in the state who are too far from a referral center for convenient and routine day-to-day cancer care. Launched in 2022, the program increases access for patients within Dillon, Beaverhead County, and the surrounding areas—addressing a longstanding barrier for individuals and their families or support systems enduring extensive travel to larger cities to receive vital treatments. The hope is the model can be replicated nationwide across rural and geographically hard-to-reach populations. Learn more: https://brnw.ch/21wNjX4 #ASCOHealthEquity
