Last week’s Global Evidence-Based Policing (EBP) Conference, supported by Policing Insight as media partner, saw pioneers of the evidence-based approach gather in Melbourne to share insights and best practice, as well as signing a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) between EBP societies in six countries that could lay the foundations for greater global collaboration and co-operation, as Policing Insight’s Keith Potter reports.
❝The MoU was signed by pioneering evidence-based policing organisations from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, and the US represented by Mark Evans, Executive Lead: Future Policing, New Zealand Police; Chief Rich Johnston MSt (Cantab), Barrie Police Service, Canada; Chief Jason Potts, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, US; Det Supt David Cowan, Victoria Police, Australia; Supt. Suzanne Hopper, Metropolitan Police, UK; Lieutenant Ruben Boomsma, National Police Netherlands (Politie Nederland); T/Chief Constable Alex Murray, West Mercia Police, UK and hosted by Claire McGuinness, Partner, National Security & Justice, KPMG❞
❝It is exciting to see the momentum for sharing knowledge globally on what works in policing being celebrated here tonight. Reducing crime is a shared goal across our countries, and randomised trials of policing programs are one way we can achieve that objective.❞ - Asst Minister Dr Andrew Leigh
❝The conference, which focused on ‘What works in policing for community safety and our people’, explored the implementation of EBP in a range of key issues, including artificial intelligence in law enforcement, frontline forensics, health and wellbeing, and counter-terrorism. There were also two symposia following on from the conference – one on gender diversity, which included a focus on the work of the 30×30 initiative in the US to address the under-representation of women in policing, and a second exploring the challenges around youth crimes and gangs.❞
❝The momentum for evidence in policing is really positive and the ACE looks forward to supporting and amplifying the work of the many people working in this space.❞ - Eleanor Williams, Australian Centre for Evaluation (ACE) Managing Director
❝Three people received Global Leadership in Evidence-Based Policing Awards: Temporary Chief Constable Alex Murray, the founder of the first society of evidence-based policing – the UK’s Society of Evidence Based Policing (SEBP); R.Mark Evans OBE, Vice President of the ANZ SEBP - Australia and New Zealand Society of Evidence Based Policing (ANZSEBP) and NZ Police Executive Lead: Future Policing; and Maureen Q. McGough, co-founder of the 30×30 Initiative and the former Chief of Strategic Initiatives for the Policing Project at the New York University School of Law.❞
