How can solar grazing reduce costs for a profitable sheep model and how do colder climate graziers overcome the challenges of overwintering? Aligning your sheep model with meeting the requirements of your solar vegetation management contract can be a challenge for new graziers. In the midwest and other colder climates, you have the additional challenge of overwintering and the associated costs. In our recent workshop with Greg Gunthorp, a utility scale solar grazier from Indiana, he discussed his for strategy pasture lambing on solar to maximize his lamb product for the market while reducing overwintering costs. He also went into why he prefers lambing on the solar site (currently) to in a barn. Greg described his sheep model as a "forage forward seasonal pasture-lambing [model] where the lambs are finished before the weather gets bad and they're aimed at that eastern ethnic markets." He lambs in late-spring / early summer on grass and finishes the lamb before the cold weather turns and works to match the time period of the ewe's highest nuitrional requirements to the peak grass growth. With his selective grass management, Greg plans to use the solar grazing to reduce his overwintering costs by stockpiling grass on his home farm. You can listen to him describe the operation in this 3-minute clip. About us
The American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA) was founded to promote grazing sheep on solar installations. ASGA members are developing best practices that support shepherds and solar developers to both effectively manage solar installations and create new agribusiness profits. We are a not-for-profit trade association founded for, and managed by, sheep farmers who became solar graziers. ASGA is accepting memberships and developing a directory and forum where farmers can connect with solar projects that need vegetation management.

We were very fortunate to have Will Harris from White Oak Pastures join us for a special interview on our October ASGA webinar. It’s an understatement to say that Will strongly believes in his bold vision for how agriculture can be done to make things better for people, animals, and the land. Our lively discussion dug into how solar grazing can create new opportunities for the sheep industry, for young farmers, and for regenerative agricultural practices to restore the land on solar sites. We also discussed the lamb meat market and the future of "solar lamb," and why Will is putting a 700kw array on his farm to graze cattle under to produce "solar grass-fed beef." Dale Caldwell from the Center for Agricultural Resilience (CFAR) also discussed the center's important farmer training work. The recording is available to ASGA members. If you're not a member, please consider joining here: https://lnkd.in/e2VYdy-b Live attendance to our monthly webinars is free and open to the public. We did it! Chauncey Watson and I are officially solar grazing!! So proud to be agrivoltaics innovators and the first farmers in Illinois north of Springfield to have sheep on the ground, managing the vegetation on solar arrays. Extra special too that our first site is in COOK COUNTY, the county where I grew up. Our 2+ year journey to get to this point has been full of ups, downs, lots of learning and new friendships. Grateful for these new opportunities and to be part of all these special "firsts" in Illinois agriculture. Thank you to our great partners at United Agrivoltaics, American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA), UA Heartland Alliance and American Farmland Trust.

Catch the Washington Post piece today: Don't miss rising star Chad Raines's story. Chad is part of the Lightsource bp grazing team and the American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA) leadership team. Hard work by three generations of Chad's farm operation is making this happen. Cheers!
“We still farm and do everything we used to,” said Chad Raines, owner of Key Farms, “except underneath solar panels.” "I was selling cotton for almost the same price my granddad did,” said Raines, driving west from Lubbock toward Azure Sky as fields of white-tipped cotton and green-leafed sorghum transitioned to rolling hills of mesquite shrub land. “If I had stuck with cotton, I would have gone broke.” Read this awesome article covering the compelling agribusiness case for agrivoltaic practices via the The Washington Post: https://lnkd.in/gqAb2TdM #agrivoltaics #agriculture #agribusiness #solar #farm #solarfarm #solargrazing

We’re still riding high from this year's RE+ renewable energy conference! With 45,000 people attending this year's conference, we wanted to make sure folks had a chance to see and understand the benefits of building strong partnerships with solar graziers. To open the show on Monday, we premiered a near final cut of the first ever solar grazing documentary to a packed audience and everyone loved it! To get updates on the film and help support our work: • Sign up for updates on the film and to inquire about screenings here: https://lnkd.in/eR6qTc-s • Join ASGA to support the film, promoting it, and all of our farmer education work: https://lnkd.in/e6AGN8gC After the film, ASGA's own Daniel Dotterer interviewed the film's director, Tucker Gragg from Blueline Productions, about his introduction to the wild world of solar grazing and why he thought this story was so important to tell. We followed that up with a lively Q&A and networking reception. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we did something unprecedented - we brought sheep to a renewable energy conference. These 5 beautiful Suffolk ewes were the talk of the show! Array provided a fantastic modal tracker and solar panels for the sheep to "graze" under. Cal Poly Pomona provided the sheep! A huge thank you to Cole Bush for making the drive down to help manage the sheep and make this operation possible. We also held two panel discussions about building farmer partnerships and showed off video resources on the Expo hall floor. We want to thank everyone who attended and helped out with the booth. A huge thanks to all of those who supported us, including the RE+ Events staff, Cal Poly Pomona, Array Technologies , Cole Bush with Shepherdess Land and Livestock, Nextracker Inc., LRE, the Solar Farm Summit team, Daniel Dotterer, Lexie Hain, Jess Gray, Marcus Gray, CWB®, Mary Grikas, and Julia Poska. We hope to do this again and increase the farmer presence at RE+ and other renewable energy conferences. As Daniel says in our film, there is so much opportunity here.
