Friday’s #JobsReport provided unmistakable confirmation of accelerated cooling and raises concerns about long-term scarring in the labor market. Further erosion in nonfarm payroll gains coupled with a modest reduction in unemployment suggests insignificant noise within July’s numbers and affirms a sustained deceleration in labor market activity.  This jobs report makes a strong case for a bigger rate cut in September than previous projections. “The latest JOLTS Report revealed a haggard but healthy labor market in the last mile of the Fed’s tightening cycle,” said ASA chief economist Noah Yosif. “These numbers suggest an accelerated pace of cooling within the labor market which, if confirmed by Friday’s Jobs Report, could persuade the Fed to enact a 50bp cut to the federal funds rate that shortens the economy’s current timeline for relief.” Read his full statement on the July #JOLTS report below.

#StaffingIndex: Staffing employment inched down during the week of August 19-25, with the ASA Staffing Index decreasing by 0.2% but holding at a rounded value of 90.
