Panic in emergency situations can prevent people from making good decisions and helping others. For Red Cross Instructor, Robert Nemshick, reminding learners to stay calm in these situations is key. “I try to relate to the staff. If there’s an emergency, there are often certain fears. I address the emotional side in the training and encourage my students not to panic.” Robert, the Training Manager at Alternatives, Inc., a non-profit agency that primarily serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is committed to ensuring that the staff are prepared to act in the moments that matter. He uses his gift of "telling a story” to illustrate the importance lifesaving skills by providing real examples of emergencies that have happened. He even shares his personal first aid story about discovering his allergy to hornets, using his unexpected medical incident to emphasize that we never know when an emergency will occur! “There’s always more to learn, and I’m constantly trying to learn new things and new ways to present the materials,” Robert remarks. His love of learning has encouraged him to add multiple engaging elements to his trainings. Adult learners often want to know “Why?” something is important to know. One of Robert’s techniques is adding contemporary and newsworthy slides and videos to training. From Damar Hamlin, football player, experiencing cardiac arrest on the field to Halle Berry choking while filming James Bond, these stories illustrate the importance of acting calmly, quickly and effectively in life-threatening situations. Robert’s impact is evident as many students come back and remember the stories as well as the lifesaving skills that come with them. Thank you, Robert, we are proud to have you as a Red Cross Instructor! ❤️

We’re proud to give a shout out to Training Services Sales Director Gwen McNamara who was recently deployed to assist disaster relief efforts in Florida! She is working the overnight shift at a shelter in Tampa with an average of 248 people, 12 dogs, 6 cats and 1 tortoise. She’s part of a crew of 5 (4 volunteers and herself) that is handing out meals, meeting basic needs and maintaining quiet and safety while the clients get some rest. As to why? Gwen states, “There is a need. And if I can help them think for a moment that they can forget and help them relax and have some normalcy, then, of course, I will. The occasional genuine thank you from the clients provides me with the motivation to keep going.” Gwen’s service is one example of how we are all One Red Cross working towards the same humanitarian mission. ❤️ 📸 In the group picture, Gwen is in the very front.
