Navigating the challenges posed by the Great Lakes' aggressive conditions requires innovative solutions. Conventional materials like steel and timber have struggled against the relentless ice movements and corrosive actions in the fresh waters of Minnesota's harbors. At AMI Consulting Engineers, we faced these challenges head-on in the Duluth Superior Harbor. Chad W. Scott, Vice President of AMI, recalls, “The need for a solution beyond traditional materials became evident as we witnessed the abrasion and decay on conventional wood piling and severe corrosion on steel piling each year.” Our partnership with Bedford Technology (now Tangent ) led to an innovative solution: fiberglass-reinforced HDPE plastic piles. In November 2015, we installed a 45-foot SeaPile offshore of our harbor side office. From the onset, this pile faced extreme tests from large ice sheets and high winds. Its resilience was evident as it consistently returned to its original position after each season. 👉 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gtbM6DYi #MarineEngineering #SustainableSolutions #InnovativeMaterials #GreatLakes #CompositePiles #HarborResilience #EngineeringExcellence #AMIEngineers

Excitement is building on the Duluth Coastal Infrastructure Rehabilitation project behind the DECC. A mild winter has been instrumental in giving contractors more time to complete this immense project. The rehabilitation is projected to be completed by late spring or early summer. Teams are currently working on bollard foundations and anchor systems. Keep connected with us at AMI to learn more about the project as it moves towards competition. AMI has a team of in-house bathymetric surveyors who can document the condition of the material along the base of a dock wall and expert engineers to evaluate dock walls for any instabilities and impacts to operations. Material buildup or removal along waterfront structures can significantly affect vessel operations. Material buildup can be caused by naturally deposited sediments, vessels arriving or leaving the dock, or loading/unloading activities. Sediment transportation along rivers is natural but can cause navigational issues if shipping channels aren’t maintained. Docking vessels and tugboats can also cause sediment material movement due to propellor wash (prop-wash). Prop-wash resuspends sediments and relocates them, resulting in local scour and material buildup areas. Scour holes, if they become large enough, can cause the dock wall to become unstable. Material can also spill over the side of the dock during ship loading, causing material buildup at docking facilities and potentially interfering with operations. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help evaluate your dock walls! https://lnkd.in/gq2GeKYw
