Generative AI is not some magical pixie dust that you can sprinkle and make things better. Especially enterprise workflows. This is the signal that the market is sending SaaS workflow providers like Workday and Salesforce after their most recent earnings report. SFDC today lost more than 20%, the most in one day in 20 years. Workday sank 15% last week. Why? Because everyone is thinking the world is changing with Gen AI and no one is sure how. This means decision makers are holding off on large budget purchases. Wait and watch is never a great buying signal. Using AI as a layer on top of existing workflows engendered by Salesforce and Workday is like using the WAP protocol in 1999 to put mobile on the internet. Or using horses to pull a car. Yes, you can do it. No, it does not make sense. We need to reimagine existing workflows. What is possible now that we have Generative AI? Do we really need salespeople to enter details of all their activities into CRM so their manager can run a pipeline report? Now, we can do better. The new workflows are going to suck for a while. This is your classic innovators' dilemma (by Clayton Christensen). But once we get going, we'll wonder, why did we think using Generative AI with existing enterprise workflows was going to work without large scale transformation? Lots of hard work ahead of us.
