Valuation tip: A/R Aging reports are useful for lenders when analyzing receivables as potential collateral. In most accounting systems, you can also run a report for Sales by Customer. We use this report to assess customer concentration risk and identify repeat clients. Sales reports give us insight into a period of time, rather than a moment in time in an A/R aging report.

In case you missed it, the freight industry is in a recession. The industry is very cyclical, with each cycle lasting about 6 years. When margins are high, new entrants (drivers, brokers) drive margins back down. When valuing a freight brokerage business, the details matter. Brokerages may have industry specialties that generate higher margins or are less susceptible to market swings. Using broad industry data is less applicable. Freight brokers must be skilled and stay informed to weather the down years. More of these transactions are structured as stock transactions than other industries.
