𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝐖𝐄𝐂𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 AMPYX CYBER had the privilege of attending the 2024 WECC Reliability and Security event, where we engaged with key stakeholders on the latest in cybersecurity for critical infrastructure. One session that stood out was the deep dive into North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) #𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲-𝟬𝟮, a pivotal initiative that reinforces the measures utilities must adopt to protect the North American Bulk Electric System. The project's final product included: 11 new standards, 18 revised definitions for the NERC glossary, and New and modified terms in the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) definitions. 🔑 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: ➡️ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲-𝟬𝟮 introduces significant updates to the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards, with a focus on refining access management controls and enhancing the clarity and effectiveness of compliance requirements. ➡️The new revisions prioritize real-time visibility into vendors' security postures and proactive risk management, enabling utilities to identify and mitigate risks across the supply chain more effectively. ➡️These updates are crucial for utilities to navigate the evolving landscape of cyber threats and regulatory expectations. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲-𝟬𝟮 emphasizes stringent requirements for vendor risk assessments and incident response, critical for aligning #OT security with emerging threat landscapes. ➡️The session underscored the importance of proactive measures and the need for continuous collaboration across the industry to fortify our defenses. Today, we turn our attention to the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which introduces significant changes that impact the entire digital product supply chain. ⏩️ Key Updates to Watch: The CRA, adopted by the Council, establishes a unified #cybersecurity standard across the #EU for products with digital elements—including everyday connected devices like smart home cameras, appliances, and toys. This regulation ensures that these products are secure before they hit the market, enhancing cybersecurity from design to disposal. What's New? ▪️EU-Wide Standards: Hardware and software products, including #IoT devices, must meet strict cybersecurity requirements at every stage of their lifecycle. Products complying with these standards will bear the CE marking, a symbol of safety across the EU. ▪️Closing Gaps: By harmonizing various existing national requirements, CRA creates a coherent framework, reducing the complexity for businesses and ensuring uniform cybersecurity protection across borders. ▪️Empowering Consumers: With CRA, consumers will have clearer visibility into the cybersecurity features of products they purchase, allowing them to make more informed decisions. 🔄 Timeline and Impact: The CRA will enter into force 20 days after publication and will apply 36 months later, giving businesses time to adapt to the new cybersecurity requirements. However, certain provisions will take effect earlier.
