AAEDC Marketing & Outreach Manager Steven Adams had a great time helping celebrate the opening of Schroll’s Brat Shop in Edgewater on August 29. It was great to hear the business’s owners, Jerry and Mary Anne Joyce, share how they went from making their old family recipe sweet sauerkraut on holidays, to selling it at local farmers markets and on Amazon (during the pandemic), and finally to cutting the ribbon at their first brick-and-mortar. We’re proud that an AAEDC VOLT Fund loan helped the Joyces seize the opportunity to lease their new retail space, and we look forward to watching their business continue to grow! In honor of National Beer Lover’s Day, we’d like to thank Anne Arundel Patch for featuring commentary from our COO, Wesley MacQuilliam, and highlighting our VOLT Fund in its recent article on the success of breweries in Anne Arundel County! As Wes said, “Anne Arundel County has great demographics, and it's great to see so many small businesses opening and growing as they meet a clear demand (for locally brewed beer)." Wes also recalled how a change in zoning regulations in 2015 sparked a great deal of interest in opening breweries, and how regulatory guidance and low-interest loans from AAEDC’s VOLT Fund helped three – Crooked Crab Brewing Company, Pherm Brewing Company, and Forward Brewing – get their start, and later expand, in Anne Arundel County.
