A new algorithm developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory shows promise for improving the inspection time of 3D-printed nuclear parts. By using machine learning, it cuts inspection time by 85%, making the process faster and more cost-effective. Currently being tested at Idaho National Laboratory, the algorithm has analyzed 30 sample parts in just 5 hours instead of 30! In a 2-1 decision, FERC has denied Talen Energy’s proposal to provide extra on-site power from the Susquehanna nuclear plant to Amazon Web Services’ data center campus in Pennsylvania. The amendment would have boosted power sales from 300 MW to 480 MW, but concerns over grid reliability and potential rate increases for customers led to the ruling against it. So, what’s next? The DOE Office of Environmental Management has awarded a $3 billion, 10-year contract to the newly formed West Valley Cleanup Alliance (WVCA) to handle decommissioning the West Valley Demonstration Project in New York. The WVCA, a joint venture of BWXT Technical Services Group, Jacobs Technology, and Geosyntec Consultants, will lead the effort with subcontractors Perma-Fix Environmental Services and North Wind Portage.
