Since going permissionless last October, Farcaster has seen 350,000 paid sign-ups and a 50x increase in network activity. There are hundreds of developers building on the protocol and a growing number of apps and frames for people to use. Today, we’re announcing a new $150M fundraise led by Paradigm with participation from a16z crypto, Haun, USV, Variant, Standard Crypto and others. This will support our work on Farcaster for many years to come. We’re focused on two things for the rest of the year: 1. Growing daily active users 2. Adding developer primitives to the protocol like channels and direct messaging We’re also hiring staff-level engineers.

Despite increasing corporate investment to harness AI's power, up to 90% of AI models developed by large enterprises never make it into production. Deploying a single model often requires the use of over 10 tools and countless engineering hours. I’m excited to share that Ansa Capital has led a Series A investment in AI Squared, an enterprise platform that dramatically simplifies and accelerates the deployment of AI models! In partnering with Founder Benjamin Harvey, Ph.D., I'm looking forward to joining the board alongside New Enterprise Associates (NEA)'s Greg Papadopoulos, and Former CEO of TIAA & Alphabet Board Member Roger W. Ferguson, Jr. This investment underscores our thesis in AI infrastructure platforms that streamline integration and expedite the journey from model development to operational deployment. With their low code solution, AI Squared goal is to reduce deployment times from months to mere minutes. This innovation is crucial in lowering the barriers to AI adoption, cutting costs, and increasing model adaptability using real-world data. Their platform enables enterprises to fully leverage AI's capabilities, transforming potential into real-world impact. A thank you to fellow investors Latimer Ventures's Luke Cooper and Ridgeline's Andrew McMahon for their continued support in AI Squared. After last month’s IPO pop, Reddit stock has fallen considerably from ~$75 to $46. As a heavy Reddit user, I’ve been wrestling with one question – why? Share your thoughts below – in the meantime, here’s my two cents:             The key questions for Reddit will be can they increase their monetization per user and is their niche community content “special” enough to advertisers to make up from each community’s comparatively limited scale.    ~Is Reddit growing?~ Unlike many mature social platforms, Reddit has shown recent acceleration in growth across both their core U.S. market as well as globally. In Q4 2023, Daily Active User growth was 27% year over year, up from 7% in Q4 2022 – In fact, the U.S. displayed even stronger comparative DAU growth at 34% vs 6%. Accelerating growth is impressive for a platform of this scale, but what is driving it? If you ask Reddit, they’d say growth is being driven by gaming-related communities and global affairs – will that persist? Compared to other social and ad driven platforms, Reddit has plenty of user growth to accomplish to compete on scale and win large advertising budgets.   ~Is Reddit’s content “special”?~ Reading through the Reddit S-1, management certainly thinks that Reddit’s content is differentiated. User intent is a key determining factor for advertising value and Reddit should hypothetically have plenty of high intent customers – For example, Purina Dog Food should in theory pay a higher price to advertise on r/Dogs given the higher likelihood for purchase within the community. That said, there are at least two major open questions: 1) What do you do with all the toxic or less appealing content currently on the Reddit platform? and 2) Will the communities be simply too niche (i.e. small) for top brands to drive large enough conversion to make Reddit an important channel?   ~Will Reddit improve its monetization?~ Reddit’s monetization doesn’t seem to be improving – and if it is, it’s inconsistent and minimal.  Reddit collects revenue primarily from advertising across and their average revenue per user declined last year. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Reddit’s U.S. ARPU fell 7.4% to $5.51. When compared to its social platform competitors, Reddit is significantly under-monetized. In 2023 Meta’s ARPU rose 2.4% to $40.60 and Meta’s has a larger portion of users in less monetizable regions and emerging markets. Why is Reddit’s ARPU growth already stalling out?   ~So, what does this mean for Reddit?~ Niche community segments x lower monetization doesn’t equal a winning strategy. Reddit with need to demonstrate an ability to increase both the pricing on its ad inventory as well as it’s users to be a public market darling.   Comment below with your thoughts and any useful articles! How do we balance technological advancement with personal rights? We're on the lookout for founders at the intersection of data privacy, AI model training, and digital footprints. Get in touch!

In 2006, when British mathematician Clive Humby declared that “data is the new oil,” he meant that data, like oil, isn’t useful in its raw state. It needs to be refined, processed and deployed into something useful. While Clive's words became somewhat of a cliche over the last decade, the training requirements of today's AI models have made his words truer today than they were in 2006. One second-order effect we've been thinking about is what this all means for the future of consumer privacy. If models are improving via training on our personal data, and we consider an individual's intellectual property, should they be compensated for their contributions? We're actively looking to back companies at the nexus of data privacy, model training, and digital footprints. We believe that just as new businesses emerged in Web 2.0 around related themes, such as DuckDuckGo and Keybase, new platforms will emerge to solve these evolving issues. Curious about how others are approaching data and privacy. Have you come across any companies that are already exploring ways for users to benefit financially from their own data? If you're building something adjacent to these themes, we'd love to hear from you! #DataPrivacy #AI #DigitalFootprints Ansa Capital

The shift towards proactive problem-solving and enhanced collaboration is not just necessary, it's inevitable. #aiops #futureofit #venture

AIOps is not just about minimizing downtime or optimizing performance; it's about reimagining how IT ecosystems operate, predicting challenges, and innovating solutions in real-time. I've been focused on finding the best early stage AIOps companies - any suggestions? Here's why AIOps Matters Now More Than Ever: Complexity and Scale: Modern IT environments are increasingly complex and dynamic, often spanning multiple clouds and service providers. AIOps cuts through the complexity, offering clarity and control by automating the analysis of vast data volumes, ensuring systems are more resilient and responsive. Proactive Problem Solving: Traditional IT operations react to problems after they occur. AIOps changes the game by predicting and preventing issues before they impact the business, transforming IT from a reactive to a proactive function. Enhanced Collaboration: By breaking down silos between IT operations and development teams, AIOps fosters a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. This alignment is crucial for the rapid development and deployment cycles in today’s agile environments. At Ansa Capital, our excitement is palpable as we look to invest in startups leading the AIOps revolution and we're excited to collaborate with founders, investors, advisors and experts. Do you think AIOps platforms will be widely adopted? What will be the main use cases? #aiops #ai #venturecapital #startup

Last week we announced Ansa's second AI-adjacent investment of 2024, Defense Unicorns (https://leapfrog.ai/). A belief underpinning this new investment is our POV that 'model-centric AI,' which has dominated the early stages of AI development and seen amazing progress over the years, has true limitations. In contrast, we believe businesses on the bleeding edge of 'data-centric AI' have sustainable competitive advantages - including reduced hardware dependency. Josh Chin and I expand on these views in our latest Open Spaces: https://lnkd.in/e24ZAiyN
