🫵 What are we talking about today?? 🫵 💲The average 401k balance of someone in their 50s is $212,400 and the median 401k balance of someone in their 50s is $64,300, according to a study released last week. 😳And that’s just among people with 401(k) retirement investment accounts. Some 20% of adults age 50 and over say they have no retirement savings at all, according to a 2024 AARP survey. 😪As a generation, Gen Xers are the least prepared for retirement. The truth is that many Gen Xers will never be able to retire or that many of us will run out of money. 🕶What should you do if you feel unprepared for retirement? 1. Get help from a financial advisor. The best athletes in the world competing in the Olympics right now all have coaches. Why shouldn't you have a financial coach? 2. Start contributing the maximum to your 401k. The maximum in 2024 is $23,000. 3. If you are on track to contribute the 2024 401k maximum of $23,000, and are 50 or older, consider making an additional catch-up contribution (2024 maximum of $7,500). 4. If your 401k plan allows the option to make Roth 401k contributions (after-tax), you should consider doing this. The money grows tax-free and you can withdraw it tax-free (once you are 59 1/2 and have held the account for 5 years. 5. Use other tax-advantaged investment savings options. One of the best ones that most people are not maximizing is the Health Savings Account (HSA). Seniors are often targeted due to perceived wealth, trusting nature, and potentially diminished cognitive abilities. Understanding the common types of scams and how to recognize and avoid them is crucial for protecting our elderly population. 🛡️ Common Types of Financial Scams Grandparent Scam: In this scheme, scammers pretend to be a grandchild in distress, often claiming to need urgent financial help due to an accident or legal trouble. They exploit the natural concern and love grandparents have for their grandchildren. 👵👴 Phishing and Email Scams: Elderly individuals may receive emails or messages appearing to be from legitimate organizations such as banks, government agencies, or charities, asking for personal information or money. These emails often contain urgent or alarming messages to prompt quick action. 📧💻 Investment Scams: Fraudsters may offer fake investment opportunities promising high returns with little to no risk. They exploit seniors' desire to secure their financial future and lack of familiarity with complex financial products. 💰📈 Charity Scams: Scammers impersonate charitable organizations, especially after natural disasters or during holiday seasons, to solicit donations. They play on seniors' generosity and desire to help others. 🎁❤️ Medicare and Health Insurance Scams: These scams involve fake Medicare representatives offering services or products not covered by Medicare, or identity theft through requests for personal information. 🏥💊 Tech Support Scams: Scammers pose as tech support personnel, claiming that the senior's computer has a virus or security issue.
