For those following the progress in the Indian semiconductor industry, let me share the next and most important workshop, which will be held on September 12 at Semicon India, involving Meity, the global industry, and top Indian academic research institutions. I want to invite companies not involved in our most cutting-edge, next-generation research and educated workforce programs or faculty, particularly female faculty, who wish to propose research projects in any of the 12 areas. I want to remind the semiconductor and packaging companies in India that they all need an educated workforce, even if they are not initially interested in research. The purpose of the workshop is to propose and justify 12 industry co-development centers(ICC) at 12-24 top academic research institutions to build the nation in next-gen semiconductors, packaging, and systems to bring India to global levels in high-performance computing and AI, 6G, Power electronics for electric cars and IoT. The research and workforce team comprises about 80 faculty and Directors of the top 20 IITs and IISc and VC of BITS, Pilani, and 24 global experts from academic institutions like Georgia Tech, Purdue, Penn State, Maryland, Arkansas, and Auburn. To start this journey, the team will propose 100 leading-edge projects across 12 strategic research areas. The proposed 12 industry centers will act as driving engines for science, technology, manufacturing, and the economy of India. My previous post made a compelling argument for these National Industry centers. As India starts with manufacturing by Micron, Tata, and CG Power with 1980 technologies, the advanced world focuses on 2030 manufacturing technologies. The only way to close this 5-decade gap is by means of 12 industry centers, with the outcome of developing the next-generation manufacturing technologies involving researchers, developers, suppliers, manufacturers, and users. The 1st step in this process is these 12 industry centers performing global-level strategic research in partnership with global companies. We expect Meity Secretary Krishnan and CEO of Tata Electronics, Dr Randhir Thakur, to give keynote talks.. We expect 10-15 IIT Directors to justify their ICCs at their institute. We expect about 30 Indian heads or senior managers of semiconductor and packaging companies to attend to convey their interest and commitment to co-investing in the proposed 12 research and education centers. The workshop will have four sessions: an inaugural, a research and education, a Directors' panel session to set up 12 ICCs with a keynote talk by Prof Ramgopal, and an industry panel session chaired by Shri Verappan, Chairman of Tessolve, for each company to express its interest in co-investing.
