A Clever Trap for Cybersecurity Phishing scams are getting more sophisticated, but so are the defenses. Microsoft recently showcased an innovative approach at the BSides Exeter security conference—introducing "honeypots" to lure attackers and gather invaluable data on their methods. By creating realistic "honeypot tenants" in Azure, Microsoft’s team, led by Ross Bevington, tricks scammers into thinking they’ve accessed a legitimate network. These fake environments allow Microsoft to monitor attack patterns and develop advanced strategies to counteract phishing attacks. How does it work? Instead of waiting for attackers to stumble upon a vulnerability, honeypots actively engage with malicious actors. Fake user accounts and even artificial shared files create an inviting playground for hackers. Once inside, attackers are carefully tracked, allowing Microsoft to gather intelligence on both large-scale cybercriminal groups and individual threat actors. Impressive Results Microsoft monitors around 25,000 phishing sites daily, with 20% of these interacting with honeypots. It takes hackers an average of 30 days to realize they’re in a fake environment—giving defenders a valuable window to analyze tactics and mitigate future threats.
