2024 Fire Prevention Week Kicks off today!
And the theme is.......
Smoke Alarms Make Them Work for You!
Both at home and in the work place we should all,
Ensure we have smoke detectors installed,
Test the smoke detectors at least once per month &
Replace all smoke detectors when they reach 10 years old, or when they are not responsive to testing.
There are detectors on the market that are friendly for hearing impaired folks as well.
A few other noteworthy tips during this week we can all practice such as,
Checking fire extinguishers for:
- Accessibility (Easy to access, away from hazard zones)
- Physical state (Corrosion, damages, hose condition)
- Pressure gauge (Needle in the green)
- Date of manufacture or hydrotesting for certain types such as dry-chemical
- Ensuring we have the right extinguisher for the application.
Class A Fires - Fires in ordinary combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics.
Class B Fires - Fires in flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases.
Class C Fires - Fires that involve energized electrical equipment.
Class D Fires - Fires in combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium, lithium, and potassium.
Class K Fires - Fires in cooking appliances that involve combustible cooking media (vegetable or animal oils and fats).
And lastly, ensuring we know the path to safety. If there was a fire in your home or work place, what is your procedure & escape route?
